SI: Hire Deadspin's Leitch to Replace Reilly Links13
Sports Illustrated needs to make a bold move to replace their most coveted talent, columnist Rick Reilly, who bolted for ESPN. The answer, more than mere replacement: Hire Deadspin's Will Leitch. I spent way too much time the past few days thinking about this wild story that Rick Reilly jumped from Sports Illustrated to ESPN. The sports-media implications are fascinating: SI's signature ... Ballhype needs a way to combine stories that link to the same thing or have basically the same topic.  I've seen a lot recently that multiple topics get to the top, but the votes are split and it also makes the front page less useful since you have doubles of stories...

      Thanks for the feedback.

In this case, I thought it was valid that the Shanoff and Awful Announcing posts both became popular - they were different takes on Dan's idea, and both received a healthy number of votes.  I agree that story duplication can be a problem at other times--say, when recaps of the same game from ESPN and FOX both become popular.  When this happens, one way to rectify is by using the down arrow.

Adding grouping to our current home page doesn't really mix with rating individual stories, but we've considered adding an alternate grouped view of the day's news.  We're open to ideas here - feel free to leave a message in our site feedback group or send us an email.

I agree with Shanoff. And since Leitch has obviously mastered multi-tasking, I'm sure he could do both Deadspin and SI's back page. Why wouldn't he do this if SI called him up and threw a cool half mil or more at him?

That deadpin guy isn't a writer. He takes tips sent in to him from other bloggers, and then puts his two cents on things. That's not writing, that's wisecracking. I've never read a single thing of his that was original.

It's not like Reilly's column was full of new ideas, except the column about where the touring members of the LPGA prefer to stick a pinch of smokeless tobacco.

... Not my idea, but one posed this morning by Dan Shanoff over at his site this morning. If you don't know by now Reilly is going to ESPN in yet another calculated hire for the Leaders. Dan Shanoffs Best Idea Ever

... thought I'd read something by Dan Shanoff that made total sense to me. However, as of this moment right now all of those things has happened. Don't take this the wrong way - Shanoff is incredibly talented, and is a very good writer. His daily blog is required reading in my mind but the man is a world famous bandwagon jumper. I am a little late to the party with this but yesterday Shanoff presented his best article ever - and it had to do with Rick Reilly leaving SI for ESPN and how Will Leitch should replace Reilly at Sports Illustrated. I'd like to throw my own spin on the ...

... . However, look deeper at the comment section of Shanoff's posthere. None of Dan's readers like the idea! And neither do I. Leitch is very talented, but I don't know if his style works for the last page of a magazine. What Will does best is write provocatively to inspire comments and thoughts. I could see him doing an excellent job with the first page of SI. But the last page? Some time later I'll talk about how a magazine should be laid out in my opinion, not now. ...
