We actually signed a free agent! ESPN is reporting here that wide receiver and former Pro Bowl kick returner Jerome Mathis has signed with the Redskins . Mathis will add depth at wide receiver and special teams, but also comes with some baggage. He’s had two recent run-ins with the law and has suffered through injury problems. With luck, a change of scenery and a new team will help him get back to his 2005 pro-bowl form. It’s also interesting to see that we’re willing to take a chance on a player with some legal issues. Redskins add WR Jerome Mathis

... described Mathis as “a speedy, athletic wide receiver and kick returner.” At 5-8, 184 pounds, he fits the Smurf profile of the Redskins current receivers. However, the Redskins see Mathis as a special team contributor. Mathis was an All-Pro returner in his rookie season [2005] with the Houston Texans, averaging 28.6 yards-per-kick return.
He was injured in subsequent seasons and the Texans released him after last season.
