TAMPA, Fla. -- Go ahead and declare that the Yankees have no reliable way to get the ball to Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning. It's actually what Brian Bruney wants to hear. Reporting to camp nearly 20 pounds lighter this spring, the suddenly svelte right-hander says that he is more ...

Who's pitching before Mo?
lenNY's Yankees —
Our last true setup man that the Yankees have had is Tom Gordon for the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Since then, the Yanks have had no steady setup man that they can hand the ball off to after the seventh inning. I read an article that said that Brian Bruney was vying for the job. Here's what he said: ...
Matsui won’t play outfield until June
Zell's Pinstripe Blog —
Hideki Matsui, Courtesy of the AP
Hideki Matsui will not be playing the outfield until interleague play in June. He is still recovering from the left knee surgery he had last year. He is going to be limited to the designated hitter and pinch-hitting role until then. He is viewed as this teams everyday DH anyway, so I don’t think this news is any big deal. ...
Why Brian Bruney Will Succeed in the Set-Up Role
Zell's Pinstripe Blog —
Brian Bruney will succeed in the set-up role. He knows this; and he’ll let you know about it. This in itself is precisely the reason Bruney will be the first Yankee since Mike Stanton to successfully bridge the gap to Mariano Rivera.
In an article written by MLB.com writer Bryan Hoch, Bruney had this to say on setting up Mo:
“I would rather somebody doubt me than call me the best. Tell me I can’t do something, and I’ll do it. That’s how I look at it. Now it’s my goal to prove all the doubters wrong.”
This quote is as important as any stat on the back of a baseball card.
The reason being is in order to be a ...

The Fate of Joe Girardi

bats.blogs.nytimes.com 3/28/2009 — ORLANDO, Fla. - The first player I saw at Steinbrenner Field early Saturday morning was carrying a pillow. It was Brett Tomko, well prepared for the hourlong bus ride across Interstate 4 to play the Atlanta Braves. Veteran move right there.

Cano Didn't Tell Yanks About Injury
slidingintohome.blogspot.com 3/14/2009 — I didn't mention this yesterday when I originally posted the story, but Robinson Cano did not tell the Yankees about his injury before leaving for the WBC. Joe Girardi said “It was a shock to me.” Damaso Marte was injured while lifting weights on Tuesday, and Girardi was pretty upset about that. ...

Bruney: I finally realized this was a full-time job
riveraveblues.com 3/19/2009 — One thing we noticed last year in Spring Training was the weight loss of Brian Bruney. He’d been scorned in 2007, sent down to AAA in August after the team got fed up with his inability to throw strikes. He responded in quite the immature ...
