Loving The National League: Red Sox To Sign John Smoltz
Small White Ball —
Last week, it was former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and National League lifer Brad Penny that signed an incentive-laden deal with the Boston Red Sox. According to MLB.com tonight, another veteran of the Senior Circuit may be on his way to Fenway Park for the 2009 season - John Smoltz. The veteran right-hander's deal with the Red Sox could be announced Thursday afternoon, according to the report. It would be the 41-year-old's first season in a uniform other than that of the Atlanta Braves. He is coming off shoulder surgery and isn't expected to start games until June 1st. The contract is reportedly a one-year deal worth $5.5 million with ...
Red Sox To Sign John Smoltz and Rocco Baldelli
Bluebird Banter —
Boston is signing free agents John Smoltz and Rocco Baldelli (sorry Hugo). Rocco's signing I understand, they need a four outfielder and he will be a good one. But after signing Brad Penny I thought thought the Sox had a deep enough starting rotation. Smoltz had shoulder surgery and isn't expected to be ready to pitch till June.
The deal Smoltz appears set to sign with the Red Sox is for $5.5 million over one season, with attainable incentives that could bring it as high as $10 million.
It seems to me to be a lot ...
So long, Smoltzy
The 'Ropolitans | NY Mets Baseball Blog —
Oh, this week just gets better and better. And it seems us Mets fans have the AL East to thank once again. According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, the longtime Atlanta Brave will head north to Boston. A Major League source who was in contact with Smoltz on Wednesday night said the 41-year-old right-hander will be calling the Braves on Thursday morning to tell them that he has decided to sign with the Red Sox. Hallelujah. First Pat Burrell, then John Smoltz. This is great. What's next? Chipper Jones moves to England? Cole Hamels retires from baseball to pursue a career in acting? The Mets stop playing the Florida Marlins in ...

Smoltz Will Never Leave Atlanta; Smoltz Leaves Atlanta
MOUTHPIECE Blog // A Chicago-Addled Sports Blog —
By way of Deadspin, MLB.com is reporting that the rumors of John Smoltz signing with the Red Sox are true.
Until now, Smoltz belonged to a collection of players who seemed certain never to wear another uniform. The list has shortened dramatically over recent years, and at this point, Derek Jeter is really the only name we can confidently place on it.
The Braves, of course, will miss Smoltz’s arm, regardless of whether it’s 41 years old. He still ranks among the best pitchers in baseball. I would argue, though, that the team will miss his mere presence as much as his numbers. The Braves of the last twenty years are a team of tradition and ...
The best general managers, 2009
Sports stories from Newsday —
The best general managers, 2009 1:12 AM By Ken Davidoff YANKEE STADIUM, NY: Tuesday, Oct. Greetings from Chicago! Last year, as you can read here , I shared a flight to the general managers' meetings with Brian Cashman (among 100 or so other people). This year? The Notre Dame women's soccer team . Now I see why they were in such a good mood - and also why they were carrying "Big East champions" paraperhnalia. Congratulations, Fighting Irish! But let's not get sidetracked here; whereas last year's Cashman sighting and flight movie selections proved sort of cosmic, I can't think of any inferences to make from this year's random encounter. The GMs' meetings are ...
