Scott Boras Is Just Misunderstood
Sons of Steve Garvey —
From Dylan Hernandez at the LA Times:
The Dodgers took a swipe at Boras in a strongly worded news release they issued Thursday night to report that the free-agent outfielder had rejected the two-year, $45-million offer the team made Wednesday.
That prompted a curious response from the Boras camp, which released a statement of its own saying that it was waiting for a response from the Dodgers about the two counterproposals it made Thursday, the most recent being for -- guess how much? -- $45 million over two years.
So why ...

... we start from scratch."
The "serious offers" quip is obviously referring to Boras' comment after the initial 2/$45m offer that he'd be looking forward to "serious offers" from other clubs. It's pretty rare that you see such a public airing of dirty laundry here, but with Boras being so stubborn despite the generous offer in a lousy economy, you have to feel where McCourt is coming from, right?
Um, right?

Why Does Manny Need All His Salary Right Now?
SPORTSbyBROOKS —
The latest word from the LOS ANGELES TIMES is that Manny Ramirez and superprick agent Scott Boras are balking at the Dodgers’ latest offer of 2 years and $45 million (which is patently ridiculous) because… wait for it… some of the salary would be deferred , meaning Manny would only see $10 million right away of the $20 million on his contract for the 2009 season. Likewise for the 2010 player option; Manny could accept the $25 million option for 2010, but again, only $10 million paid on time, and the rest would be paid over the three years after the contract was over. ...
Deferred Money Is Sticking Point With Manny And Dodgers
MOUTHPIECE Blog // A Chicago-Addled Sports Blog —
... A rejection that involved Manny saying “no” to $45 million. That’s a tough public pill to swallow in these economic times, especially when guys like Adam Dunn are scraping by on chump change. But it turns out perhaps it isn’t all Manny’s and Boras’ fault: the Dodgers were trying to stick him with a contract that involved largely deferred money. ...

Sons of Steve Garvey —
... But enough about Plaschke. The point is, Old Bill, just like the rest of us, didn't know the true story. By midday Friday, it became clear that the Dodgers' offer had enough deferred payments and options, that it was nowhere near the two-year $45M deal they had said they proposed. Boras wisely leaked the truth about the Dodgers' offer, and suddenly, McCourt's victim card backfired in his own face: ...
