Tuesday's quick hits - Dempster lands on DL
Circling The Bases —
... because of a broken toe sustained celebrating Sunday's victory. It really doesn't seem to be the Cubs' year. Dempster got off to a poor start, but he had a 2.84 ERA over his last seven outings, making this a significant loss even if he misses just three turns. Rather than return Sean Marshall to the rotation or try Jeff Samardzija, the Cubs will turn to Kevin Hart as a stopgap fifth starter. - ESPN's Jayson Stark believes the Phillies are more interested in free agent Pedro Martinez than they're letting on. Phillies Downplaying Pedro Interest?
MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com —
Jayson Stark at ESPN says the Phillies are "exploring all possibilities" to shore up their rotation, and one of those possibilities has been Pedro Martinez, who they saw throw yesterday. While manager Charlie Manuel didn't seem to indicate Pedro was the answer to the team's issues, a major-league source told Stark that "If [Pedro] throws well, they'll do something." The source, based in the Dominican Republic, goes on to say that the Phillies have already notified Martinez that they likely won't reach his demands of a $5MM prorated salary. Instead, they're shooting for an incentive-laden deal of some kind. Keep up with the latest Pedro ...

Coming soon to a ballpark near you: Pedro Martinez?
Red Sox Monster —
While a fair share of the world ponders the unlikely possible trade of Roy Halladay to the Red Sox (didn't the team already turn down Johan Santana when it had far less pitching depth?), here's something else to ponder. Pedro Martinez is going to be back in business, and soon. What, you're not excited about that? What kind of Red Sox fan are you? The Philadelphia Phillies watched the onetime Red Sox superstar throw simulated games in the Dominican Republic yesterday, raising the spectre that he could return to pitching the majors in 2009. And honestly, why not? The modern-day Pedro is no staff ace, but media reports suggest he can still hit 93 on the radar ...
