Patriots Caught Cheating
Published 9/11/2007 at About Football
... ' bench as the team sent in defensive signals. NFL security confiscated the video camera and videotape, and shipped it to commissioner Roger Goodell, who, in turn, invited Patriots head coach Bill Belichick to New York for a little sit-down. Tuesday ESPN's Chris Mortenson confirmed that Goodell has concluded the Patriots did in fact violate rules that all teams had specifically been warned about by the new commissioner. And now the team faces sanctions that could include the loss of multiple draft picks, suspensions, and/or fines. In my view, players who give themselves a competitive advantage through illegal sources (and are caught) are suspended and fined, so the same should apply in a situation such as this. If Belichick knew about this, which it's hard to imagine he didn't, then he should be suspended and fined. And as a deterrent to others who might be tempted to do anything similar in the future -- or are alre ...

Published 9/13/2007 by Baseball Crank at Baseball Crank
... The news that Jets coach Eric Mangini caught Bill Belichick in the act of stealing the Jets' defensive signals via video camera in violation of NFL rules presents a number of interesting issues. For obvious reasons, the NFL isn't going to go back and start forfeiting games or kick Belichick out of the league, but the penalty does have to be real and stiff to discourage this sort of thing from happening; the NFL has talked about docking the team draft picks, and a first round pick would be a sufficiently stiff penalty that it should be included. And yes, the penalty should fall on the team as a whole, since this was an operation involving multiple people from the head coach on down for the benefit of the club. ...

... Now, let's not beat around the bush here boys and girls: This is a very serious set of circumstances, and the two people who look the most foolish out of all this (and who should swing for it) are Bill Belichick and Roger Goodell. Goodell claims Belichick did the taping thinking it was legal, even though the NFL rule book makes it pretty clear, in black and white, that it's illegal to do such taping. The "I didn't know it was illegal" argument was used by Billy Boy back in September, when the NFL caught him taping the NY Jets in the first regular season games. The argument was ...
