MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com —
... According to Ken Rosenthal, the Rays are close to signing Pat Burrell to a two-year, $16MM deal. It'd be a solid move, as the Rays can increase his value by not using him in the field. The '08 Rays struggled against lefties (.726 OPS) and Burrell crushes them (.952 OPS in '08). ...

Rays close to signing Pat Burrell.
Tampa Bay Sports Blog —
According to Ken Rosenthal, via MLB Trade Rumors, the Rays are close to signing former Phillie outfielder Pat Burrell to a two year $16 million deal. This move makes way too much sense for all parties involved to not happen. Burrell is the right handed bat that the Rays are looking for to slot at DH on a regular basis and he comes fairly cheap. The contract that’s speculated on above is a perfect fit for the Rays and their budget. I really like this move for a few reasons.
Burrell can still hit and we won’t have to watch him stumble ...

Link Roundup: Catching up with Bobby Bradley
Bucs Dugout —
-P- Pat has a long recap of the 2003 season, and my eyes are burning. For better or for worse--mostly for worse--2003 has to qualify as one of the more colorful and entertaining seasons in recent Pirates history.
-P- I enjoyed this story about former Pirates top draft pick Bobby Bradley and sympathized with his outlook on his career:
“I’ve read things where people said I was a bust and I don’t think that is necessarily fair,” said Bradley, the Pirates’ first-round draft pick in 1999 from Wellington (Fla.) Community High School, who never reached the majors. “I pitched pretty well when ...

3:10 To Joba —
Take it away, Ken Rosenthal. The Rays, filling their need for a power hitter, are close to signing free-agent Pat Burrell to a two-year, $16 million contract, according to major-league sources. Burrell, 32, will serve as the team's designated hitter. The Rays, nearing their payroll limit, could use some combination of Ben Zobrist, Gabe Gross and Fernando Perez in right field. The Rays had considered a number of free agents, including Milton Bradley and Jason Giambi, to fill either their DH or right-field vacancies. ...

... , or are about to, ink Pat Burrell to a two-year, $16 million deal. He's probably going to DH most of the time. That actually improves his value as with the positional dock that left field gets (-7.5), Burrell was costing the team about 20.5 runs by playing the field. Moving to DH negates the poor defense and only incurs a 17.5 run penalty. With his offensive projection, that makes Burrell between a 2 and 2.5-win player and worth $9-$11 million per year. ...
The AL East Just Got A Little Tougher
Sliding Into Home: A Yankees Blog —
According to Ken Rosenthal and Buster Olney, the Tampa Bay Rays have signed free agent outfielder Pat Burrell to a two-year $16 million deal. Olney says that Burrell is expected to be the Rays' DH most of the time. Last year with the world champion Phillies Burrell hit .250/.367/.507 with 33 HR and 86 RBI. He will definitely be a nice addition to the Rays' lineup.

Rays Sign Burrell
FanGraphs Baseball —
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Rays are close to finalizing a two year, $16 million contract with Pat Burrell. He’ll fill their hole at DH and give them a right-handed power bat to fit into the middle of their line-up and provide some offensive depth.
For Burrell, I’m pretty sure this is not what he had in mind heading into the winter. He made $14 million last season in the final year of a six year, $50 million contract, so he’s taking about a 43 percent pay cut and handing in his outfielder’s glove in order to get a full time job ...
Parker Brothers Unavailable, Cubs Sign Milton Bradley
The Cub Reporter (TCR) | A Chicago Cubs Blog —
Our wonderful radio listening audience heard Bruce Levine of ESPN1000 reporting that the Milton Bradley signing is about to become official. Three years and $30M sounds like the damage, which seems a bit expensive with the Rays about to sign Pat Burrell for two years and $16M total. I'll chime in later with a thorough analysis, but adding the AL OPS leader, even if a bit of a fluke, is never going to hurt your team. That is unless Bradley kills a racist Bleacher Bum, then things might go bad. ...

Earlier today, Burrell, as reported by Ken Rosenthal, agreed to a 2 year, $16 million deal with the Tampa Rays. Then later this evening, ESPN.com reported that Bradley had reached an agreement with the Cubs on a 3 year, $30 million pact. Burrell has played his entire 9 year career in Philadelphia, and helped the Phillies to a World Series championship this past season with 33 home runs and 86 RBI. He averaged 28 home runs a season, only once hitting below 20 in a single year. Bradley has been much traveled due to his attitude and demeanor, but ...
