PHIL FULMER OUT AT TENNESSEE
NBC Sports - College Football Talk —
Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer will not return in 2009. Fulmer, who signed a long-term contract extension this year, is expected to coach the remainder of the season and then be sent packing, ESPN is reporting . Tennessee is 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the SEC this season. Fulmer won a national championship at Tennessee in 1998 and is the longest-serving coach in the SEC, but in recent years several other SEC programs have passed Tennessee by, and he’s been under intense pressure from Volunteers fans. A formal announcement is planned for today.

... According to ESPN.com and Volquest, Philip Fulmer will not return to Tennessee next season. The final nail came Saturday when the Vols were spanked, 27-6, by South Carolina and Steve Spurrier. This is one of the great football traditions in the land. A big job usually results in a big name. Wonder if David Culcliffe would be considered. The Duke head coach had success as the Vols’ assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. This is a hot spot fo a coaching derby. ...

Report: Fulmer Will Step Down As Tennesse Coach
SPORTSbyBROOKS —
... of adjustments I observed in the second half. Fulmer’s coaching staff failed to show the capacity to adjust to what little the Bruins could do on offense. After all these years at the helm, you would think X’s and O’s would be the last thing Fulmer would have to attend to. If the report is true, I do commend Fulmer for stepping down. He’s showing great deal more class than some of his SEC contemporaries have in the past (see Saban , Tuberville , Petrino ). Surprisingly though, the ESPN report doesn’t included the scheduled paraded in Knoxville later today.

... Well, he has officially committed to Tennessee. A team that is mired in awfulness at 3-6. A team ranked 99th nationally in passing. A team who’s coach just agreed to step down after this year. ... isn't a single coach born in the state in which they coach and none of the 11 other SEC coaches are graduates of the school they now coach. A regional pursuit has gone national. Shortly before the Alabama game kickoff, Phil Fulmer stood in front of the dry-erase board and jotted down game notes. Finished, he turned around and walked over to me, "You picked a hell of a season to write a book, son" he said. In the end, as with most things in his career, Fulmer was right. Talk about a bad day for fat college coaches. Two staples of the stomach will be out of their jobs at the end of the season. Earlier today, Tom Amstutz the fat coach of Toledo who got the fun win at the Big House, announced today that he will resign at the end of the season. And now the news out of Knoxville is that Philip Fulmer is also out and the end of the season. What a sad day for fat coaches everywhere. Amstutz while not prolific certainly shows the girth to make himself a household name in the future and this is certainly a setback. ...

Now what does this mean to you. If you're a Tennessee Homer, it's the end of an era. But it is what it is... Fulmer is sick and tired. ... If Phillip Fulmer laments the way he is now going to leave the University of Tennessee, he has no one but himself to blame for how it ended. Not solely because of his team’s atrocious play this season; in past eras a season so poor might have slid under the table as an aberration. Now, a very public display of futility over the first 10 weeks of the college football season means the end of a coach who won a national championship a decade ago, and it may be even a little bit ironic considering how Johnny Majors was forced out. ...
