Sox threaten to boycott Japan trip
F ORT MYERS - The Red Sox [ team stats ] trip to Japan has already hit a major snag. During a players-only team meeting at City of Palms Park this morning at 8:30, the players decided unanimously, according to more than one player, that the Sox would not take the field for their scheduled 12:07 p.m. exhibition game against the Blue Jays today unless there was a resolution to MLB s decision not ... Red Sox Threaten To Boycott Trip To Japan
Published 3/19/2008 by Josh Alper at FanHouse
Filed under: Boston, Red Sox, AL East, Breaking NewsAs a way to lessen the hardship of traveling to Japan for the season-opening games, the players on the Red Sox and A's will be getting $40,000 each for making the trip. Not bad at all for the horrors of first-class travel while being paid your already-supple salary. The coaches, on the other hand, probably would make good use of that money. Maybe a down payment on a pool or stock it away for little Sally's college education. But they're getting squat for the trip and that's not sitting right with the Red Sox players. During a players-only team meeting at City ...

UPDATE: PLAYERS VOTE TO BOYCOTT JAPAN TRIP
Published 3/19/2008 by Fenway West at Fenway West
In a player only meeting today the Red Sox voted to boycott the Japan Trip and refuse to get on the plane unless MLB compensated coaches equally with players. ($40,000 appearance fee) The players voted unanimously and also may skip today's game against Toronto. Many Red Sox players and coaches believed the MLB had origionally agreed to compensate all coaches and were reneging on the deal. Tito said the following: “As of 9:04 it does,” said a visibly upset Francona when asked if the goings-on had cast a pall on the day. “We’re spending energy on something we don’t want to spend it on. I don’t understand it. I was embarrassed this morning. I had to tell them, ‘Hey, that money you may ...

MLB Stiffs Sox Coaches; Players Threaten Boycott
Published 3/19/2008 by Brooks at SPORTSbyBROOKS
Rob Bradford and Michael Silverman of the BOSTON HERALD report that MLB is trying to get away with not paying Red Sox coaches the same appearance fee the players are getting for the club’s upcoming nightmare trip to Japan. ( Welcome to my last-place 1991 fantasy baseball entry ) The players are incensed by the move, and reportedly voted this morning to “ not to board the Red Sox’ flight to Japan if the matter remained unresolved this evening. “ This boycott may read to some as coaches not getting paid at all for the trip, but it appears they are getting their normal ...

More About The Boycott
Published 3/19/2008 by Ian at SOX & Dawgs
As I write this the start of today’s Boston Red Sox vs Toronto Blue Jays game has been delayed due to the dispute. The official word was “the start of the game has been delayed because of dispute between the Red Sox players and the Major League Baseball Players Association and Major League Baseball”. The Oakland A’s have also decided to protest the situation and will not make the trip unless their coaches are compensated. But in a conflicting report, Michael Silverman reports that the A’s aren’t doing anything. The Red Sox did announce that today’s starter, Daisuke Matsuzka, will head over to the minor league complex and pitch against ...

Red Sox’ Fake Boycott Threat Heeded By MLB
Published 3/19/2008 by Brooks at SPORTSbyBROOKS
Like everyone else, we reported this morning that the Red Sox were threatening to boycott their trip to Japan if their coaches weren’t paid the same appearance fee ($40K) as the players. ( El Tiante’s chest hairs approve ) MLB caved today in some fashion, probably giving the coaches something. We can’t imagine it was $40K, but the issue has apparently been resolved. What’s funny to us though is how the main media (and us, at least initially) took Bosox players seriously in this matter. Does anyone really think the team would’ve not gone to Japan if their demands hadn’t been met? Especially with Dice-K scheduled to pitch the first game? How much of the reax of ...
