OneguyfromSpain If you want to see racism, just see the treatment suffered by Spaniards and spanish characters in Northamerican and british movies, odl and recents. That is racism!
-
-
mookie Whilst this appears racist to many in the rest of the world, on talking this over with many Spanish friends (and experiencing their culture for some time) I can say that nothing sinister is meant by this sort of behaviour, but is just their sense of humour. In the same way as "Your Mumma" jokes may be found offensive by people in other countries, this is by some of us...
I don't think too big a deal should be made out of this (whilst it is disconcerting) -- and I am VERY anti-racism.
-
joeblowtoo Hey mookie, just because it isn't offensive to one group of people doesn't mean it isn't offensive. Oh, by the way, did you ask any Chinese if they found the gestures offensive? Didn't think so. If you are so anti-racism, you would see that such a gesture, to deride people solely on their appearance, is racist. Making fun of Africans, making fun of Anglos, making fun of Hispanics because of how they talk, how they look how they think, IT'S ALL RACIST!-
mookie JBT, I don't think you understood my point. Or perhaps, more likely, I didn't make myself clear enough. I did indeed find the Spanish team's actions offensive and RACIST (if indeed they were doing what we all assume they were doing).
It is for that exact reason that I got into a discussion about the reasons behind it with Spanish friends of mine -- to air my views on the racist behaviour and to find out what would motivate this.
This is the key here. Rather than getting angry, as you appear to be doing in your response to me above, aggression needs to be replaced with understanding what causes this level
of ignorance in people. Otherwise we will never reduce this behaviour in society.Unfortunately, in my opinion, aggression does nothing but breed further aggression and does not lead to any solutions. We need to work out what causes these attitudes -- that is the only way to come to a solution (or at least approach one).
-
karma Your explanation makes no sense. 'We do this kinds of stuff all the time, so it's ok' is not a defense and there's no understanding that needs to be done. Somethings are black and white and this is one of the case. "Spanish friends" of yours were just making excuses just like the basketball team instead of owning up to the mistake. I think what you are missing here is that the Spainards were not making racist gestures about themselves, they were making fun of whole group of people other than themselves.
There's a reason why black people call each other the "N" word and it's ok, but it's not ok for other race to use that word and what the Spainards have done is like using the "N" word when it's not their word and their excuse is that they were joking... What is there to understand about their behavior?
-
mookie You clearly didn't read what I said. At no point did I say that it was a defence. I condemned their actions as "RACIST" in capitals, in case you didn't read it correctly....
Until you stop being blinded by your anger (and creating new logins for each post) it's impossible to have a proper conversation.
Buonanotte.
-
karma You are keep repeating to people that we are missing your point, that we "clearly didn't read" what you said... I can read perfectly fine. Let me spell out for you in your own words:
" I can say that nothing sinister is meant by this sort of behaviour, but is just their sense of humour. "
"Rather than getting angry, as you appear to be doing in your response to me above, aggression needs to be replaced with understanding what causes this level
of ignorance in people. "So, with that in mind re-read my response. It's clearly responses to your quotes. So just because others point out faults in your logic, you can't just say we didn't understand you. I understand exactly what you are saying and it doesn't make sense. It's not anger, it's not an attack... It's criticism that your point makes no sense.
-
mookie ...and here you have proven that you did not understand what I was saying.
What you are confusing is [a] me repeating the opinions of others (the first quote you've taken from my first post) and [b] me stating my own opinion (my second post) where I stated that the concept was clearly racist.
I can see that you have an axe to grind, but you are doing it with the wrong person.
-
karma Only axe I have to grind is when people try to hide behind what they've said previously by saying that 'oh you just didn't understand'... I quoted you exactly word for word. It was your words. how could there be misunderstanding? By your own words you are saying you still think it's racist BUT it's their way of joking and we should try to understand them... Is that not the right summary? It's in your own words!! And my response was directly to that summary. Geez... If that wasn't summary of your point, what was your point?
-
mookie YES! Spot on...
*I* think it is racist.
*They* think they are merely joking.
*I* want to understand *their* mentality behind it all -- and rather than being angry, I think *you* should want to understand it too.
But that is entirely your decision.
Out of interest, how did you come across this site, having only joined today?
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to bed...
-
karma So basically the point I was making was exactly regarding what you were saying in first place so I don't know how I misunderstood you...
I came across the site because I heard about the picture, wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I wanted look it up to make judgement for myself and this site was the first site that popped up and I happen to read something that made no sense.

wutznext I'm sure the Nazi's thought it was funny when they gassed the Jews, and I'm sure the KKK thinks it's funny when they lynch a black man. It's just their sense of humor. That's bull$hit. Ignorance should not excuse racism. This is both ignorant and racist.-
mookie Read my post above. Conversation has progressed.

bocaraton Exactly, its no big deal, the chinese aren't even complaining about it; if anything, they must have seen it as comical.
It's the persons out there with an inferiority complex, such as TheTruthSpeaks that are really doing all of the whining and crying.

TheTruthSpeaks Mookie is pretty much non-sensical at all. No one agrees with you Mookie, your statements, arguments, or whatever you're saying is totally absurd and ridiculous. "Agression leads to blah blah blah..." No one is understanding a word that is coming out of your ignorant mouth. No one is being aggressive, no one is misconstruing your words. It is clearly written there and as clear as can be. Your two statements: 1. "I can say that nothing sinister is meant by this sort of behaviour, but is just their sense of humour" and 2. "I don't think too big a deal should be made out of this" just shows how diversified and intelligent you are, I think a rock outside my door probably can determine that their gesture is more harmful than joking. You are totally a brainless idiot who just doesn't get it, and not sure if you should be allowed to use a computer and any heavy machinary without some assitance. wutznext and karma makes some great points and the conversation has only progress with everyone else besides you. You really have no point cause you made some very stupid remarks defending the picture even though you think the picture is racist. It's like saying I think guns are very dangerous, but people who use them in arm robberies are just joking and telling mama jokes. Wow, i still get amazed with some people, what is going through their heads. Mookie you need to stop talking dookie and just admit you were wrong and made stupid comments and end it there. -
Lax2020 Everyone is right except you Mookie. You say it's racist, but your defending the Spanish. I'm Asian and I joke around a lot about my own race, but you dont see me calling any African-Americans the "N" word or Mexicans the "W" word, let alone publish it. I understand about the joking part due to the diversity of my neighborhood, but they had no right to make fun of another race, especially a physical appearance. In conclusion, YOU ARE WRONG, YOU TALK IN CIRCLES, THE PICTURE IS *REALLY* RACIST, and most importantly, *YOU ARE WRONG*!-
bocaraton I think mookie is not totally wrong. There is some rightness to what he is saying. Something that no one here has thought about is that this whole problem has to do with one's world view.
Take a step back and think about what if things were different, what if people desired to have oriental eyes, so to speak, rather than the european, western eyes. Then we would not deem it offensive, but rather, would see what the Spanish team did as an attempt to make themselves more beautiful.
However, the fact is we see the european-western model as ideal and not the oriental, but why can't the oriental features be desirable too? The fact of the matter is that even persons with certain facial features get operations done to make their appearance more european-western.
That its offensive, I do not contest. But I seek to have people think of why it is we deem it offensive, and why it is offensive. It all comes down to one's world view. Would it be offensive to europeans or westerners if orientals posed for pictures stretching their eyes out vertically? I don't think so. Why is that? Well, because our society, and world for that matter, seems to deem the european western models (physical features, appearance, etc.) as more desirable.
--bocaraton
-
TheTruthSpeaks Wow, what a lame explanation of "worldy view". So Spain's team did this pose out of wanting to be more beautiful like those asians with "oriental eyes." Using the word "oriental" is racist in itself, s it proves how worldy your views are. This is probably the worst and even an offensive comments since you're trying to convince people that the picture taken was a way of conveying their admiration of how beauty is in different views. My god, what's next you will say wearing white dunce hats with a white robe is justified since we all need to step back and have a wordly view since not many people can have such a stylish eye for outfits like the KKK folks do. The only worldy view you have is pretty much in that little walnut of a brain you have.-
bocaraton Dear TTS:
Your ignorance insults my intelligence. You're not worthy of a response.

TheTruthSpeaks Bocaraton, I would expect that kind of answer from someone who thinks they are an elitist who thinks they are so self righteous about their views. And again what a lame and sorry response. I expect nothing less from an idiot who thinks he knows everything. Maybe if you had some intelligence you could think up of something for your lame excuses to why a "wordly view" would be the reason behind racism. Sorry, I'm not worthy, i'm not worthy, great one of so much worldly experience. You probably never left your small town of Florida to even know what is out there.

karma I'm just awed by this comment... One world view? What if people desired oriental eyes? OMG, are you serious? Really? What if everybody can use to "n" word without the racist connotation? What if people are acting like retard in front of mentally handicap as way of mimic and learn their behavior rather than making fun of them? What if?? Well, this isn't about what if, this is about what is and what it is, is something that is offensive to another group.
You ask why it is that people deem "it" offensive? Are you serious? Come on... You can't be this clueless. Things are offensive not because what the act or word is, rather what it represents in its context. Spanish making slanted eyes is offensive not because there's anything wrong with having slanted eyes, but it's been picked by non-Asians as a trait to make fun of Asians for. Do I really need to go in details of what I'm trying to say here? Come on... You can't be this ignorant

bronxchic To be very honest I find it to be exremely disturbing and not at all funny. I have to wonder what next and who next. Will they appear in black face next?? What will the comments be then?? I've grown up in the Bronx, lived here all of my life and truth be told Hispanics are some of the most racist people I have every had the discomfort of knowing. Not all are this way but the majority are ignorant and have come to show me that they can be a low class group of people. This is based on my personal experiences only. I have also had the pleasure of knowing some Hispanics that are beautiful people. Unfortunately the majority does rule, and FYI they use the "N" word way more than African Americans.-
bocaraton Hello Bronxchic:
I think you err in classifying all Hispanics together as a homogenous group of people. In reality, if you go to the Southwest, you will find some of the most tolerant and accepting people. We can't deny the obvious. For you to say that the majority of Hispanics are some of the most racist people is way overbroad, and overgeneralizes. In reality, the majority of Hispanics are very accepting of other cultures, and will not mind others coming and taking away their land, and thereafter sharing it with them. Look at the history of Hispanics in the U.S., start with Texas, and then on to the Southwest with the Californios.
As a response to "why?", the nincompoop that said Spain has small brains, I would tell you that Spain was the greatest imperial power in the world for many years, and colonized many parts of the world. If Spain had small brains, Spanish would not be the second most spoken language in the world. So think about that nincompoop.
--bocaraton
-
bronxchic Apparently you don't really read everything do you? I said clearly that not all are that way and I have had the pleasure of knowing some that are beautiful people. I speak from my experiences period....What the team did was racist bottom line and according to some of the links and article posted below that has been clearly established. Not the first time!!My comment does not go overboard because YOU have not seen what I have nor have YOU experienced what I have. Try walking a mile in someone elses shoes before you just disregard where their opinion(s) maybe coming from.
-
why? that's exactly why Spain has small brains, colonize others was a selfish act and fuked up the world . It's not something to be proud of.

blinsert Actually, there has been a very well publicized instance of blackface racism in Spain, just earlier this year, when Spanish fans wore blackface to taunt Lewis Hamilton, a UK race driver who is part black. Equally well known is another incident four years ago when Spanish fans hurled racial epithets at black UK football players. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7229551.stm
It's well-documented that racism in Spain is on the rise, and for the usual reasons - "those people" are taking away our jobs, security, etc. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2004/nov/20/spain.football. Check out this blog for an interesting firsthand American-in-Spain account of the rising skinhead movement: http://eslhell-thepaininspain.blogspot.com/search/label/racism%20in%20Spain
There was also an absolutely horrific incident late last year in which an Ecuadorean girl was attacked for her race in the metro. Be warned, this is graphic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zwg6d046ARo
All to say that this latest incident of the team pretending to be slant-eyed Chinese is really just a low-level manifestation of a much deeper problem in Spanish society today.
-
bocaraton Wow, I had no idea that there was such a widespread problem such as that in Spain. That merits attention. Thanks for your objective reporting blinsert. Those things you mentioned are not tolerable in a civilized world.

why? spain has small brains. I am not Chinese but sure want to kick their ass. Go USA teams -
grafight You cannot measure the Spaniards with our same yardstick of guilt-generated political correctness. We've just recently started to become aware of what's offensive and what's not. All the way through the 70's Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons as well as various TV sitcoms were portraying many ethnic stereotypes. Disney's "Alladin" was accused of negative Arabic stereotypes on Robin Willam's portrayal of the desert merchant. FOX news called a gesture between Barrack Obama and his wife "a terrorist fist bump". Do you know what the signs for "Black" or "Chinese" are in American Sign Language? Would you think a deaf person is "racist" for using them? Of course not! The intention is merely to communicate, not offend.
Spain has not had any recent history to justify the spread of a political correctness movement, like the USA. In Spain people aren't obsessed over differences in appearance, and pointing those out does not mean an expression of superiority or even mockery, but rather an acknowledgement that despite external differences we're still all the same. Here in the USA I see reason to be offended at any suggestion that a certain etnicity is "different" and therefore somehow does not enjoy all the same priviledges as the rest of the "melting pot". Here when you mock a race you make them an outsider.
But the gesture in the picture is meant as a wink or a salute to a foreign country, not as a marginalizing of Asians residing in Spain. When Chinese Olympic organizers from China complain to Spain that the gesture is offensive, I'm sure the players will apologize. But that hasn't happened yet. I've only read about Chinese-americans complaining and I believe their view of the issue is lacking in objectivity by the reasons above stated.

bocaraton Finally another person with brains on this blog that isn't letting their emotions get in the way of their reasoning. You raise really good points grafight.
--bocaraton
-
karma First, yes. There are probably no country in this world that tries to be more politically correct than US because of our history and Spaniards maybe should be given some room for slack.
Second, we are in 21st century here. This isn't the 1970s. Also, you are not comparing apples to apples when you compare this picture, which is a blunt act of intended purpose, to Aladdin.
You said: "But the gesture in the picture is meant as a wink or a salute to a foreign country, not as a marginalizing of Asians residing in Spain." Are you really serious about this? So you think when the Spaniards were taking the picture, there were thinking 'let's make slanted eyes to the Chinese as a good gesture'... That's your explanation? You do realize how ridiculous that sounds. If they want to wink or salute to a foreign country, how about winking or saluting? People aren't that stupid to buy your BS. Spanish did it as a joke since they are going to China and it blew up in their face. I've read nowhere from Spanish players saying that was meant to be a wink or a salute. Stop making things up to justify a stupid action.
Also, you've only read Chinese-American complaining? So, how many Chinese newspaper have you read? Plus, shouldn't Chinese-American have right to complain as much as any Asians? Doesn't really matter where you are from as long as you are Asian because it's pretty well established gesture around the world as making fun of Asians.
-
grafight Hello, thanks bocaraton for the kind words. Karma, I agree with your first paragraph. However you said that the picture "is a blunt act of intended purpose". How do you know? Can you get into the player's minds and see their "real" purpose? They have stated to the press over and over that it was meant as a friendly gesture. Why do you have such a hard time believing it? Why is it to you "absurd" or "BS" do you have such a deep insight into Spanish culture that you know beyond question what the gesture means to them? Joking and using humor in Spain is a way to express friendship. When you first are a stranger they won't joke with you. Only once they've accepted you as a friend they will use humor to let you know you are now "part of the family".
I didn not make things up. The words wink and salute have been used in some sites to describe the intent of the gesture... Call it what you will... I do believe the players when they say their intent wasn't racist (As in racism: "the belief that races have distinctive cultural characteristics determined by hereditary factors and that this endows some races with an intrinsic superiority over others" - Collins Dictionary)
Also it didn't "blow up in their face". The Chinese embassy says the find "no offense" with the ad.
As far as Asian-americans go, I don't blame them for feeling offended. After all, as recently as WWII they were being put in concentration camps just for looking "asian" in their own country: the US of A. If spaniards had done that to their own citizens, then yes, I would consider their gesture in horrible bad taste and offensive. But they didn't.
-
karma I don't know why I'm keep coming back to respond to these comments... You ask me how I know if "it's blunt act of intended purpose?" Can I read into player's minds? Can you read into players minds? What they say and what they think especially after this blew up in their face isn't necessarily congruent. How do you know for sure all of them meant it as wink and salute which is the biggest BS I've ever heard... If you are Spanish, take yourself out of the defense mode and look that what happened as a whole... Seriously, you think anyone with remote intelliengence will buy that they were doing it to salute the Asians?
And yes. I don't have to go into their heads to know this is a blunt act of intended purpose because whether you think this was done as a joke, as a racist gesture, or as some morons would think of as a salute, that is the intended purpose of the action, whereas Aladdin's intended purpose wasn't to offend the Arabs, it's purpose as a cartoon was to entertain. That's movie's purpose.
Wink and salute. Give me a break. I want you to walk up to a black person, hopefully the biggest one you can find and say "Hi "N" word" and try to explain to him that you were just saluting him.

bluesy Most of I guess don't know the whole story. The concept of the photo did not come from the Spain team. It came from a Chinese national that carried the Olympic torch. He is the President or Owner of a sports mechandising company that's sponsoring the Spain team. It was his idea. So, I feel the anger should be addressed towards him and not at the team-
TheTruthSpeaks Get your information correct bluesy and stop making up facts. The idea did not come from a Chinese national. If you're talking about Li-Ning, the Spain team just signed a four-year contract extension with Chinese clothing brand he owns. It has nothing to do with the picture. The picture was an advertisement shown only in Spain's newspapers. Please don't spout out wrong facts to give people the impression that it was a Chinese national who gave the idea to insult a whole race? Give me a break. The concept it was said was given by the "photographer" as one of the basketball players on Spain's team has blamed. Yeah blame it on the photographer and you guys as professional athletes do not have the moral brain power and ethical correctness to know what is right and what is wrong.-
bluesy I didn't say he did it to "insult a whole race" as you say. It would stupid for him to insult his own race. It was done as a marketing gimmick that went bad in my opinion.-
TheTruthSpeaks But the concept didn't come from a chinese nationalist at all, so I am not sure where you're getting your false information from. Learn to read and decipher information before you start saying wrong facts. It was not a marketing gimmick with the idea given by a chinese Nationalist, you are WRONG in that fact period.

SpottieOttieDopaliscious I blogged this pretty thoroughly here. Stop by and take a look.-
bluesy The article was pretty interesting. I wonder why there is no mention of the Chinese national that I read about in another article.

tatbabe It doesn't matter where the photo came from or who had it.What matters is the FACT that the team posed for the pic. I do find it offensive, unsportsman like and immature. I would like to see them pose for a photo for USA. They're not talented enough to mock ALL the nationalities, ethnicities and mix breeds we have here. This photo looks like something taken in grade school. Not by a group of adults representing a country. -
karma For all the non-Asians here arguing and coming up with lame justifications to why this picture is not meant to be offensive, have you guys actually thought through to see if this is really your place to make that judgement?
If this does offend large group of Asians, whether they are in Asia, Europe, or US, shouldn't that be enough for the Spaniards to apologize? If they are not as politically correct as US, I think most can give benefit of the doubt, but now knowing that it does offend Asians, shouldn't the Spainish say sorry at least?
This is what's missing about the whole thing about the Spaniards. They try to argue that this is not a big deal and that it was a joke, but it's not their place to make that judgement because they are not the ones being made fun of. Why is it so difficult for those morons to say, 'you know, it was very shortsighted and the intent wasn't to make fun of Chinese and we are very sorry for offending anyone'. Only person that said something remotely close to that is Paul Gasol.
-
nolimit2391 I dont see how its racist.. chinese people do in fact have slanty eyes... if a chinese man imitated my eyes (non-slanty), i would not consider him a racist by any means.. i would likely laugh at the comical gesture-

humbert oh god...has everybody gone crazy?
Somebody said "hispanics" are the most racist...whithout knowing that spaniards are not Hispanic in that term...if you live in Bronx, ok , but wouldn´t be racist to call Hispanic (like mexican or cuban) to EUROPEAN?we are noth sud-americans... wouldn´t be racist to show spaniards as latin-american in movies? or spaniards eating tacos or wearing mexican hats? does anybody know that we seem exactly equal to French or italian or greek?...do I have to start shouting because you think spaniards are a topic that it is not real? do you think it is racist to make a joke? I laugh when I travel abroad europe or EEUU and they do bullfighting when they know I am spanish...is just funny ( AND I JUST HATE BULLFIGHTING, BUT IT IS THE WAY THEY USE TO HAVE FUN WITH ME!) or when they play salsa music! what would you think if somebody thinks sweden prepare shushi?
what you are doing is protecting the blind guy, treating him as if he were some kind of stupid ...and that is the way he doesnt want to be treated! he wants to be treated as a normal guy! you are trating chinese the same way , they dont need your silly protection , if you think they need protection is because you think they are not equals to you , and THAT IS RACISM!
aish...Spaniards are not racist because you dont know us all! and english are not drunk , sweden girls are not supermodels , german are not nazis...if a friend of mine is fat , that is what he is, if a friend of mine is black or chinese..its the same...does that means that I cannot call him names? an idiot is an idiot , no matter the color or race...Hammilton is an idiot, but we cannot say it because he is black , no? so...are you racist if you say Fernando Alonso is stupid?? of course not... dont be more papist than the pope, just relax, chinese were not offensed, Spanish did not do it to offend...you are creating a hate that nobody more see! its just a joke, Spanish would laugh if chinese show themselves wearing bullfighters suits!!!!! it would be funny! (but 90% of spaniards hate bullfighting because of its violence)
in fact, I have read that "the guardian" is going to be sued by Spanish sports federation...the spanish basket players are just great guys, humble and funny...
I cannot understand that way of thinking , that world where you cannot do a charicature in a comic of a black/white/japanese...person
maybe we should not paint the chairs in black because we put the butt in them!!! ¬_¬
Be sensible, we racist? we are one of the most advanced countries in civil right stuff, homosexual can get married in here, we give health insurance to everybody , no matter if you are european or not...we are the country that takes more african inmigrants from marroco...etc
a fact is racist if your intention is to offend somebody because of his/her race...maybe some countries have arrived to that point where racism is not an option because we are more liberal than that, and when you arrive that point, no matter the joke you do , it will NEVER be racist.
-
bronxchic What the hell are you talking about??? Please get your head out of the sand your suffocating yourself!! aish...Spaniards are not racist because you dont know us all! and english are not drunk , sweden girls are not supermodels , german are not nazis...if a friend of mine is fat , that is what he is, if a friend of mine is black or chinese..its the same...does that means that I cannot call him names? an idiot is an idiot , no matter the color or race...Hammilton is an idiot, but we cannot say it because he is black , no? so...are you racist if you say Fernando Alonso is stupid?? of course not... dont be more papist than the pope, just relax, chinese were not offensed, Spanish did not do it to offend...you are creating a hate that nobody more see! its just a joke, Spanish would laugh if chinese show themselves wearing bullfighters suits!!!!! it would be funny!

Kilo199 Hell yes it's racist...I'm Asian and i'm deeply offended.
If it isn't racist, then I dare the entire Spanish basketball team to visit any Asian pool hall or bar in any chinatown or related town in America and pull that slanted eye move while saying "Ching chong ching"...they should do it right in front of the guys with the tatoos and hard stares..Hell, I personally invite any Spanish national to do it over here in any Kung Fu or Karate studio to see if we laugh...I bet the laughing will stop after the first punch, kick, bottle, brick, or cue stick is thrown.... Hopefully no one gets shot.
Fight Racism through violence...it's the only language racists understand.
I think it's going to be a bad idea for Paul Gausol to walk in China town, Korea town or Little Tokyo without security when he's back playing with the Lakers..some Asian gangsta might like to "talk "to him in a friendly non racist fashion ..oh he might check his car every time he drives around.. oh and Paul check your chinese take or sushi next time cuz the staff might think it's really fun to add some free ingredients too!
-
nolimit2391 why are you offended? you do have slanty eyes and say ching chang chong, don't you? so whats the big deal? the answer is nothing, and you're not a hardass. And I would have never guessed you practiced kung fu..-
nolimit2391 and his name is Pau-
Kilo199 It's racist...Do it the next time you order Chinese food...stop jacking off in front of your computer and go outside tomorrow and walk up to the next Asian guy and do the gesture and say it and see how we react.
You could never understand, you've never been insulted for your race or punched or kicked because of your race.
Pau, Paul..whatever...he sucked and he's the reason the Lakers lost against the Celtics.
-
nolimit2391 I have not said that there is anything wrong with having certain racial attributes, not in the slightest. I do not condone racism by any means. There are certainly many serious racist actions that are absolutely horrible and unjust, Kilo199 if you've been insulted and hurt because of your race I'm sorry to hear this. I haven't said anything with intent to degrade you or your race. Is it not true that different races have different physical attributes and tend to have different habits? I believe it is, I believe stereotypes exist because more or less they are what is observed. I realize they dont apply to every person however I also don't feel it necessary to get worked up over something like this. We're all different, it's very obvious, and we should be able to embrace those differences without getting offended. It's my opinion. I do not believe the spanish team was acting with racists intentions.

Kilo199 I'm not hard at all in fact i'm a pacifist! Do you live in Southern California? You can do the gesture and make those noises to me live and see how I react?...Let me know my email is kilo199@gmail.com. I've got a great place in Little Saigon...bring your friends...it'll be a great little meeting. -
karma Person like you are what's wrong with the world. You've create an account not to any value to the conversation but just to go off on a racist rant hiding behind your monitor...
With "witty" comments like these its obvious that you add no value to the society, in fact you maybe better served dead than alive especially to Asians... Internet is a place where everyone is entitled to an opinion and unforunately you are entitled to yours... I hope you are really proud to have become the person you are.... A waste of valuable space.

genki-deska yeah dudes its not even offensive or racist. its not like they were making fun of our genitalia like in Duece Bigelow part 2 where he is in Europe. -
TheTruthSpeaks I was expecting more of these racist idiots coming out of the wood works since they just love hiding behind their monitors saying stupid and offensive stuff. They're a bunch of insecure losers who only feel good about themselves when they make fun of other people. Well whatever they get their kicks, and this is why things perpetuate and goes in cycles cause they are going to breed more morons and it goes on and on. How pathetic are these fools.
Not all Spainards are racists, but it seems that their have been a lot of incidents of it just like blinsert pointed out. It's hard to defend stuff when there's so many occurances of it isn't it?
And here's another one, yes what a nice gesture:
I definitely hope Madrid loses their bid for the 2016 Olympics.

TheTruthSpeaks Awesome response, seriously it's like one of those reactions you would hear when you're at the playground from a kid who can't think of anything useful to say. Every one can see how worldly you are with a comment like this. Coming from someone who probably doesn't know anything about worldly views but preaches it like he has been outside of his duplex trailer he calls home. You're a typical hick who thinks he knows everything but never experience racism. I mean people who don't think or even step back for a second to see why something offends someone is because they are too close-minded or dim-witted to even realize it. Everything to you is not offensive cause you never experienced it first-hand. Maybe you should actually go outside once in awhile and I don't mena experince the diversity of worldly bocaraton but go somewhere different maybe take it slow and go to the next trailer park down the street. Find out how it is there then take another step and go to a big city like Orlando, where there are some more people of different races than bocaraton. then maybe, if that gives you a next feeling inside try more diversified cities like LA, NYC, Philly. If you can't handle that experience there's always mama ready with some good ol cookin' at home for you. Ahh sfae at home where you can collect your welfare checks and provide the world, yes the worldly world with a positive contribution. Better yet i think you should stay home, cause people of your mental capacity can't be out and about with some assistance. It is very dangerous out there Forrest Gump.-
nolimit2391 Im actually from NYC, although I'm currently studying in Mexico.-
TheTruthSpeaks Unless you're "bocaraton" I am not talking to you. bocaraton posted an immature comment and then of course realized his idiotic blunder and deleted his comment. I can't believe the how immature these people are hiding behind their screens and pretending and playing stupid games. Grow up people. Unless you are bocaraton and created another account I really don't know why you responded when you don't even know who is directed to. So I was not talking to you. Good for you that you're from NYC studying in Mexico, who freakin cares. You and bocaraton are probably the same person or from the same racist mentality, racists do stick together and come in the low IQ packs. Your mom probably dropped you on inbreed head of yours, that clearly explains why you are studying in Mexico. I'm done repsonding to these closed-minded, dim-witted racist idiots.-
nolimit2391 are you suggesting a mexican education is inferior? why? because its mexican? do you actually know anything about mexico? are you saying this and then calling me racist? the irony!
and no, im not bocaraton

bluegirl I live in Spain, and Im not surprised by this. I m British and my husband is from Ecuador, we've been living here for nearly 5 years, and the racism here is incredible. The Spanish have a degrogitory name for every race, and they complain about every race but themselves, for my husband the problem is a lot worse than for me. They invaded S. America and stole everything, and now when those people come here they complain. My husband lived in U.K for 5 years with no problems at all, but here we hear comments nearly everyday. To be honest we have very few Spanish friends, most are foriegn. We're leaving soon- Thank God. Only 10% of Spaniards leave Spain for holidays- that's 1 problem, the other is the aftermarth of Franco- they're very backward thinking here. My comments are generalized of course! -

OneguyfromSpain Yes ladies and gentlemen, Spaniards are very bad people. They fought in the german army during Word War II (by the way the helmets the german soldiers wear in "Call of duty" are the "Spanische division" ones).
They tried to avoid Protestantism to be spread across all Europe.
They stole Americas gold to pay their mercenaries from Germany, Italy, Ireland and even England.
They reduced to slaverry to the american natives (instead of exterminate them).
And in addition to all, the spanish influence is the worst of influences.
But, can anybody tell me why on earth should we know that in UK and the States, the racist people, make the "slant eyes" gesture to insult british and american asiatic people?
I'm sorry for the spanish people in UK and the States, probably, from now on, they will be seen as hostiles by asiatics in those countries. One enemy more for them.
Ánimo caballeros! Vosotros sí conoceis lo que es sufrir el racismo!

Spanish Basketball Team Celebrates Trip to China With Slant-Eye Team Photo [2008 Beijing Olympics]

... How sensitive? Mad crazy girlfriend sensitive, that's how sensitive, the kind of people who find slights in the most meager of details. Spanish Team Should Be Prepared to Get Called Into the Principal's Office

Sportaphile —
... team is circulating around the internet today, and the guys appear to be slanting their eyes with their fingers to mimic Asians. The odd thing about this picture, is that it was published by the Spanish Basketball Federation, and these guys obviously put a lot of thought into it (because the photo is not candid whatsoever).
Who decided that this would be a good idea? If you’re going to be racist, the least you could do is be FUNNY and racist.

Double Standard Much?
Upside and Motor —
Photo from The Guardian, via FanHouse. If for some reason you haven't seen that picture, you should. It's a team photo of this year's Spanish National Team mocking the eyes of their Olympic hosts (...and it was a full-page ad). If you think it's funny, fine, cool, whatever.
