Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Friday that Carpenter suffered a bit of a setback after a 39-pitch appearance and could not provide a timetable for when his ace might resume his throw program. ... When the club shut down Carpenter in April, it said he was suffering from arthritis in the elbow as well as spurs. Hopeful spurs were the source of his initial problem, the club now has increased concerns about the arthritic condition.
