The minicams were rolling, the motor drives were whirling and clicking, and David Beckham had them all exactly where he wanted them. Confetti fluttered in the air Friday afternoon in Los Angeles, and the scruffy-faced celebrity husband and multimillionaire marketing icon was about to begin his quest to convince all of America it needs to join the rest of the world in its fascination with ... US Soccer Snob’s US Soccer Update – 07/18/07
Published 7/18/2007 by Soccer Biz Mark at US Soccer Snob
... A perfect follow-up to our quote of the week II. Every time Joe American sports fan feels threatened by soccer (which should be all the time this week), the ignorant haters come out of the woodwork don’t they? I know that the entities vying to bring MLS to St. Louis can’t be happy after reading this joke of a column in the St. Louis Post-Distpatch by Bryan Burwell. I mean, there is poor research and then there is just straight-up denial. How do you define denial? I’d start by writing this sentence: “Even in a soccer hotbed like St. Louis, is there anyone who believes it will ever rise above the NHL or even the WNBA, and become a core American sporting pastime?” Hasn’t soccer (not just MLS, but all levels of soccer in this country) supplanted these sports already? The NHL is a close call, but if you think about national team games of all co ...

And it is not spelled futbol’ One thing Jay, its fútbol (you forgot the accent champ) only in Spanish speaking parts of the world. You can read the rest of the article at your own discretion. Seconded to Jay Mariotti is Bryan Burwell, who’s epic piece can be found here. His best quote was ‘What’s it going to take to convince people that soccer has its place in America, and that place is somewhere below hockey, the World Series of Poker and pro wrestling and just above pro lacrosse?’ I mean this guy really can’t be serious, can he? Can you really dislike a sport that much that you know absolutely nothing about?? Just below the World Series of Poker? How can someone get paid for an arti ...

Hey Beckham - Call it Futbol!

... Please world, let America be indifferent to pro soccer Bryan Burwell’s effort in St Louis to tell us what he thinks of soccer. I think the attitude he expresses will be recognized as the dinosaur that he is. Remember, it’s not football in America, it’s “incredibly massive men on steroids and human-growth hormone trying to dismember each other”. ...
