"Sure, Kobe recanted the trade demands three hours later -- almost like someone backing out of an eBay bid or something -- but that didn't stop me from hammering the ESPN Trade Machine like Joe Cazalghe pummeled Peter Manfredo." [link]

    boxing reference gets my vote.

Oh, and having the Bulls as the best trade option. Sure he technically says it'll be Phoenix, but we know the Lakers won't deal Kobe within the conference.

I really didn't need Simmons to give me a reminder of the Barkley trade.

I used to love Bill Simmons, back when it was just his website rants.  I've gotten bored with his continued formulaic style, though.

"First, Kobe has a complete no-trade clause and is too image-conscious to play in a small market. He's not going to Memphis. He's not going to Milwaukee. He's not going to Sacramento. Kobe will want a big market that keeps him in the national limelight."

This isn't true, or at least, the idea isn't. Kobe may very well think like this, but he, like everyone else who thinks like this would simply be wrong. Name the player who is the face of the NFL... Peyton Manning... in Indianapolis, not exactly a big market. Face of the NBA? LeBron James... in Cleveland, freaking Ohio. Trust me, limelight, endorsements (which Kobe doesn't need help getting), and attention for great players can come anywhere, not just LA and New York.

As for the scenarios, all of the top three have potential. But even so I doubt they can go through.

Glad you mentioned that. People act as if everything away from the east coast is some kind of inaccessible, remote outpost.  Maybe 30 years ago, it would have been a kiss of death for his marketability to play in the midwest but not anymore.

On the Wikipedia list of the top 210 TV markets in the U.S., Sacramento is 20th and Milwaukee is 34th, both of which are ranked higher than San Antonio, who's on TV all the time - practically every weekend. Way higher are Boston, Philly and Atlanta, who never get televised nationally unless they happen to be matched up with a good team. The moral of the story is, in 21st century America (and Toronto), the good teams are on TV all the time.

... Well, ESPN is on it and Bill Simmons has a number potential deals that meets the financial requirements for an NBA trade and the logical needs and wants of both teams involved. Ranked in order, this Mavs deal (sans Dirk):

... and wrote an extended section about LeBron showing signs of turning the corner and getting it in Games 3 and 4, to the point that I had my hopes up for Game 5 because there was a chance something truly special might happen. Here's the exact quote: "The fact remains, No. 23 happens to be the only interesting thing about this painfully disjointed Pistons-Cavs series ... Like many others, I'm looking forward to Game 5 solely because of LeBron. Like many others, I want him to shift into fifth gear, hush the crowd, rip Detroit's heart out and make the Vivid Video face after everything's said and done. Like many others, I will be disappointed if this doesn't happen." Bottom line: if you're going to rip another writer, make sure you've actually read the guy first. While we're here, my ESPN colleague Colin Cowherd mocked my seven trade scenarios for Kobe on the radio last week without reading the ent

... After Kobe told the world he wanted to be traded, Simmons posted a list of possible trade partners for the Lakers. He explained that it would be very difficult to make a deal but not impossible. To Simmons credit, no one I read has a better grasp of the inner workings of the NBA's salary cap, how salaries match up and the value of the expiring contract. So while I could give a shit about the NBA, I trust Simmons knows what he's talking about. But in viewing the trades, I was struck that none of them looked all that remarkable. The best one, the Shawn Marion deal, even seemed a little light for arguably the best scorer of his generation. But then again, I don't think Simmons was suggesting that the Lakers should make any of these deals, he was simply pointing out deals that he felt could be made. Well, then came Cowherd...
