 Sports Illustrated Jinxes the Cubs in April? Coverline: “It’s Gonna Happen”
We think this might be exclusive, since it won’t hit the SI website (and mailboxes) until later today, and newsstands Thursday, but this week’s cover is pure genius. Jinx much? The Cubs are in first - write it down, April 29, 16-9, one game lead over the Cards - Derrek Lee is swinging that MVP bat again, Zambrano is having the best April of his career, the $136 million man is ... Sports Illustrated Hates the Cubs
Published 4/29/2008 by Jack Cobra at Cobra Brigade
****Major hat tip to The Big Lead for posting this picture of the upcoming issue of SI. I no longer have a subscription to Sports Illustrated since almost all of their articles are online and there were too many ads in the magazine, but I'll be heading out to buy this copy when it comes out. Actually, I have copies of all the SI's with Cubs on the cover since the days of Ryne Sandberg. The Lovely Dentist actually wanted to throw them away last week as we are preparing to move. No way, I told her. Not gonna happen. Instead I ...

Dusty huh? The quote machine moves to Cincy
Published 4/29/2008 by Byron at GoatRiders of the Apocalypse -
... (We've never had to ask that before.) And finally, the Quote of the Day. "I ain't the boss, ain't close to being the boss, don't want to be the boss — I'm the shop foreman, the boss on the field." — Manager Dusty Baker on his thoughts about the firing of general manager Wayne Krivsky and his replacement, Walt Jocketty. Dusty's not the boss. Only the boss on the field. And for real finally, it looks like SI just can't let sleeping bears lie. ...

... site: “Coachella Fest organizers are offering a $10,000 reward and four Coachella tickets for life for the return of an inflatable pig that broke loose while flying over Roger Waters’ closing performance this weekend.” We can almost guarantee that such a combination of words had never previously been put together. *Chat with Bill Simmons. Expect much talk of the Celtics. *What’s up with that bobblehead? *Jinxing the Cubs.

Sports Illustrated: Over-Hyping the Cubs as Always

Sports Illustrated gets proclaim-y with Fukudome cover
Published 4/29/2008 by PostmanR at The Postmen // A Sports Blog // Chicago, IL.
... deep in the playoffs once Lou Piniella realizes Kosuke Fukudome should lead off, Soriano should bat behind Ramirez and Lee and that Reed Johnson is the greatest Cub that ever lived and he should play everyday. (The latter here is my own personal preference — to be believed by no one but me.) But even still, if I’m a Cubs fan — and that I am certainly not — this makes me cringe ever so slightly. It’s only April, must you torture us so? {Via The Big Lead, who like, totally had the exclusive scoop on this.}

Series Preview - Cubs vs. Brewers
Published 4/29/2008 by Jason at GoatRiders of the Apocalypse -
... The Big Lead gives a heads up on the April Sports Illustrated Cubs jinx. Sadly, in yet another misadventure with Japanese characters, the SI cover actual reads "Monkey Fire Happy Pants" thus, clearly, actually jinxing the St. Louis Cardinals. Did I have too many commas in that sentence? ...

Well, So Much For A Cubs World Championship [MLB Closer]
Published 4/30/2008 by Rick at Deadspin
... I found this over at The Big Lead and couldn't stop laughing. Why would Sports Illustrated do this to the Cubs? Chicago is in first place in the NL Central, a game ahead of the Cardinals, just minding their own business and enjoying their place in the sun for once ... and then SI has to pummel them with their jinx bat? This is the sports equivalent of you stomping on the elaborate sand castle that your little brother had spent six hours constructing. The thing had a working drawbridge! Bastards. ...
