The Capital Times — 7/18/2008 6:49 am Would you eat a beetle for $30? Well, as many as 250 Madison Mallards fans did Thursday night. The Mallards hosted Beetle Eating Night at the Duck Pond at Warner Park, in which the first 250 people to eat a dead beetle received a free ticket to the ballpark's all-you-can-eat-and-drink Duck Blind party deck -- a $30 value. ... eating a great big juicy beetle? No, I’m not talking about Paul or Ringo. I bet the marketing department of the Madison Mallards didn’t think they’d get as many as 250 fans to crunch down on the tasty bug but they did. At about $30 per seat, it added up to a $7500 giveaway. Let’s just hope that the people who downed the tasty little morsel purchased several $8.00 Beers (credit STBF) to wash down that white gushy stuff inside those crunchy bugs. POOP!!! ...

The Mallards hosted Beetle Eating Night at the Duck Pond at Warner Park, in which the first 250 people to eat a dead beetle received a free ticket to the ballpark’s all-you-can-eat-and-drink Duck Blind party deck — a $30 value. From my limited knowledge, it’s not often that beer is included in that category, but it better well have been for the 250 who managed to swallow their pride and swallow a bug to get in. Then again, I’m guessing there was plenty of beer ingested before the ...

... So you can imagine how I felt, then, to find out that 250 of my former neighbors in Madison ate a live beetle to earn a free $30 ticket to the all-you-can-eat-and-drink party deck for the Mallards, a local summer collegiate baseball league. While I'm sure people have done far worse for free food and alcohol in a college town, I still have to question anyone eating a bug for a prize that trivial and small. (Although it's possible that after a few free and delicious pints from ...
