Staying in Seattle a 'touchy subject' for Ichiro Suzuki
Staying in Seattle a 'touchy subject' for Ichiro Suzuki
Ichiro is very different - right down to his skivvies. Off-field interests of the Seattle Mariners perennial All-Star don't leave him fond of the most popular leisure pursuits among his peers, such as fishing, hunting or smacking that other often-confounding white ball. "I don't golf," he says. "That's something you can do when you get older. There are some things I can only wear at this age." ...

Ichiro has some wisdom to impart
Gaslamp Ball — ... I'm reading this article about Ichiro and I can't help but wonder if Ichiro were an American ballplayer, how he would've turned out. Ain't no self-respecting American baseball coach would let a skinny kid get away with showing up the big boys with his pansy swing. The first time a kid tries to slap at a ball and bail out of the box, you know that's getting "corrected". And with that in mind, who am I to tell Ichiro that his opinions make no sense?

Ichiro Being Ichiro
U.S.S. Mariner — ... Jon Saraceno does a piece on Ichiro in the USA Today. It’s mostly about whether he wants to come back to Seattle or not, and the quotes honestly aren’t that positive. But when it veers away from his contract situation, there’s some really funny stuff. Such as:

Ichiro’s World
Knuckle Curve — ... pointed to this USA Today article on Ichiro Suzuki. Seattle’s star outfielder isn’t just a hit machine, he’s a quote machine. Some of my favorites from the article:

The Tao of Ichiro
MVN RSS — ... for the link. Ichiro sat down with Jon Saraceno of the USA Today and unload a bunch of quote worthy quotes . It would keep me in Quote s of the Day for weeks, but alas I figured just one post would do it. Of course he skirted around the question of whether or not he d stay in a Mariners uniform at the end of the season. Ichiro on Ichiromania: After 2004, I realized it was impossible to please them. I discovered I needed to do what I needed to, (and) if people like it, that s good. I became more confident. And that Ichiro became a part of me, instead of me chasing after him. On his contract situation: It s a very touchy subject right now, so I d prefer not to answer. A part of me wants him to stay in a M s uniform. Another part of me wants him to hit the free agent market. Because lets be honest here, Andruw is more than likely done as a Brave at the end of the year. I for one wouldn t mind

USA Today Interviews Ichiro
MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com — ... Jon Saraceno of USA Today was granted an extensive interview with the Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki, through an interpreter.  While Ichiro doesn't say anything groundbreaking regarding his future after the 2007 season, a few quotes have negative connotations for Seattle.  For example:

Attn : Lady Bowlers Of The Pacific Northwest
Can't Stop The Bleeding — ... The Mariners OF, as quoted today by USA Today’s Jon Saraceno.

Ichiro as RP?
DETECT-O-VISION — ... that Ichiro is willing to pitch . :- ) Good discussion there. Heh! 1. Don ' t know if our NPB amigos are aware, but for some years, the best player in MLB was Jose Canseco. Somewhat after his peak as a player, he took the mound for one game, was poor, and had an elbow injury that IIRC seriously derailed his career. So MLB execs are always going to think of that first. 2. Brooks Kieschnick w

Ichiro Says Funny Things
FanHouse — ... Ichiro Suzuki might be my favorite interview subject in all of baseball. You just never know what's going to come out of his mouth. In a recent USA Today feature, the 33-year old Ichiro talks about everything from his future in Seattle to his dream of becoming a 40-year old pitcher, but what caught my eye were his thoughts on steroids and female bowlers. On performance-enhancing drugs: "When you take steroids, it's not as if wings grow out of your back, and you start flying all over the place and stealing home runs (from hitters). The word 'cheating' doesn't apply for me regarding steroids." Tiger Woods' athleticism: "Tiger is a great golfer, but ... when you say athlete, I think of Carl Lewis. When you talk about (golfers or race-car drivers), I don't want to see them run. It's the same if you were to meet a beautiful girl and go bowling. If she's an ugly bowler, you are going to be disappo

Ichiro: 'Once I Turn 40, I Can Become A Pitcher.'
FanHouse — ... , I was alerted to this USA Today piece on Ichiro Suzuki . There are an abundance of strange quotes, which the Japanese star is known for. It's his calling card, if you will. Both With Leather and USS Mariner point out Suzuki's odd statments about Tiger Woods and also about performance-enhancing drugs. But, what I found most interesting were these words from Ichiro: "Once I turn 40," he says, "I can become a pitcher. I'm kind of serious about it. But I'll have to learn to throw a knuckleball. Right now, I could be a 'normal' pitcher," who can top out at 95 mph with a fastball. I'm not exactly sure why the copy editors at USA Today left "who can top out at 95 mph with a fastball" outside of the quote. Maybe it's an error, or maybe the man who penned this piece, Jon Saraceno, added in those words knowing Ichiro can in fact throw 95 mph. Or maybe I'm just interpreting that wrong. (That's proba

Ichiro Might Try Pitching
Larry Brown Sports — ... Ichiro gave a rare, extended interview to Jon Saraceno of USA Today in which he revealed a lot about himself. In the article, Ichiro says the possibility of leaving the Mariners would be a touchy subject. The entire article is well worth a read if you want to get inside the head of the Mariners outfielder. But there was one part that stood out to me, potentially more than anything else. Ichiro says he’s considering pitching.

The Week In Quotes: May 14-21 by Alex Carnevale
Baseball Prospectus — ... "Tiger is a great golfer, but ... when you say athlete, I think of Carl Lewis. When you talk about (golfers or race-car drivers), I don't want to see them run. It's the same if you were to meet a beautiful girl and go bowling. If she's an ugly bowler, you are going to be disappointed." --Ichiro (Jon Saraceno, USA Today ) "You can see what color my underwear are." --Ichiro, on the lack of privacy in the clubhouse. "It's a weakness to try to show yourself to be more than you actually are. To me, it's cooler to hide yourself, even if you're better than that. That's a big difference between Japanese and American cultures. Sometimes, (Americans) try to make themselves out to be bigger than they are." --Ichiro WHERE ARE THE WASHINGTON GENERALS WHEN YOU NEED THEM? "There's always an urgency, but again, with 30-something games, 40-something games in the books, you're not going to say 'We can't do t
