Shaq for Marion: Done Deal (pending physical)
The Suns roster gets slower, older, and more expensive. That Gasol trade is looking a lot more reasonable now.

I think the Suns are making this trade because it ties in with their "Planet Orange" marketing campaign. Shaq will indeed resemble a giant planetary mass in the Suns' hideous orange alternate uniforms.

Yeah, you might expect to see more Signing Day stories on our home page today, especially since player movement generally draws a lot of interest.  But as a whole, our users are much more into pro sports ... the NFL and NBA have each received 4x as many votes as their college counterparts so far this year.

This will be interesting to see how this pans out. It doesn't really fit into the Suns "run and gun" style, but then again, it's a whole different story in the playoffs. He could be the difference for them to finally make it to the finals. I guess they felt it's time to shake things up a bit.

Shaq Traded to Phoenix? Can the Suns Run on Diesel?
Larry Brown Sports — ... If ever passing a physical were a challenge, this would certainly be the case. Usually (as in the Johan Santana case) it’s a gimme. A piece of cake. But here they’re saying that passing the physical is the hangup between Shaq getting traded from the Miami Heat to the Phoenix Suns for Marcus Banks and Shawn Marion. Yeah, that’s kinda a big deal. Not such a given when it comes to the fossil that Shaq is. So how about this for a sec, how the hell is Shaq going to fit in with that run and gun style of Phoenix? And how the hell will they ...

02/06 Morning Minute: So Much For “Signing” Day
WaitingForNextYear — ... .  Double figures.  Ira freaking Newble.  Well done, sir. It looks like the Miami Heat are in the process of making a huge move in dealing Shaqulle O’Neal to the Phoenix Suns.  The other side would be sending statistical monster Shawn Marion and point guard Marcus Banks back to Miami.  Of course, this is all pending a physical, and with O’Neal…you never know.  Shawn Marion’s fantasy owners are likely looking for their nearest ledge right about now. And finally, folks, its ...

Empty the Bench — ... - “News of the pending trade sent shockwaves through a Western Conference landscape still shifting after Gasol’s trade to the Lakers. League executives were stunned the Suns even would seriously contemplate such a move, let alone agree to it, given O’Neal’s declining production and enormous contract. Said one West executive: ‘I truly thought this was a joke.’” - Johnny Ludden, Yahoo! Sports - “When I first heard this one, all I could think about was what sort of crack the Suns have been smoking. The Suns want to give up one of the best all-around players in the league and a ...

The Way Shaquille O'Neal Plays Now
ESPN.com - TrueHoopJohnny Ludden of Yahoo writes: O'Neal, 35, still is a physical presence but seems a poor fit for Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni's up-tempo offense. He has already missed 14 games this season and is sidelined with bursitis in his left hip. Suns coaches, however, watched film of O'Neal on Tuesday, the source said, and came away thinking O'Neal's strong passing skills from the high post would work well in their half-court schemes. The Suns also have shown increasingly more confidence in playing forward Boris Diaw next to Stoudemire ...

2008 Year-End Sports Review: What We Already Knew
The Scores Report - The National Sports Blog — ... After the Lakers acquired Pau Gasol for Javaris Crittenton, Pau’s brother and a bag of peanuts, two rivals made big trades of their own. The Suns traded Shawn Marion to the Heat for an aging Shaquille O’Neal, breaking up a Phoenix team that was a couple of bench-clearing suspensions away from upsetting the eventual champion Spurs a year earlier. Marion was (reportedly) starting to become a distraction, so the trade at least made a little bit of sense, unlike the Mavs’ decision to ...
