As usual, the Eagles dug up a familiar face to fix a special teams problem (as when they brought back Koy Detmer as a holder for David Akers last season), bringing back Reno Mahe and releasing J.R. Reed after the return game blew Sunday’s matchup against the Pack. Despite leading the NFL in punt return yardage in 2005, Mahe was so highly coveted that no team brought him in during training camp this summer for a look. Nonetheless, he has shown he can catch the ball on punt returns, something that newbies Greg Lewis and Reed couldn’t do. (Of course, it’s coach Andy Reid’s fault more than anyone that the team wound up in that predicament; Reed just takes the fall for it.54r) It comes as a surprise to no one that Reid made this move, though Eagles fans will probably never be so happy to see the unexciting Mahe as on Monday night against the Redskins.
