Tiger Woods certainly no Arnold Palmer at most boring Masters in memory

Tiger Woods has shown time and time again he is no charger. He may be the most dominant player of all time, but he doesn’t set hearts aflutter like Arnold Palmer used to do during one of his famous charges. Give Woods the lead and he’s a pit bull. Put him a few strokes back and he turns into Shelley Winters. Woods had tons of opportunities to make a serious run for the lead ...Masters Final Round real-time blogging -- Pt. 8

“real-time blogginf?” Crap. Cink falls back one. It’s official: I’m the kiss of death. Let’s try this: Tiger will shoot 96 and dissolve into tears on 18th green, where he vows to quit golf and take up bowling. Hey, if I’m going to be wrong anyway… Oh sure, Jimenez is posting low round of the day. Arnold Palmer, Honorary Starter. For ...Joe Gergen, Keith Hernandez, Arnold Palmer, Sox-Yanks

Here is my Friday newspaper column, in which I break the news that the Red Sox and Yankees are a popular TV attraction, get to the bottom of Keith Hernandez' new haircut, review a golf book and bid farewell to Newsday institution Joe Gergen. The first time I talked to Gergen was at the 1985 Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium, when I awkwardly told him how much I enjoyed reading him growing ...Justin Rose, Trevor Immelman Top Masters Leaderboard after Round 1

Arnold Palmer ripped one down the middle at the 1st to begin the 2008 Masters Tournament in appropriate fashion. As always, it's a good sign when the ceremonial first drive doesn't hit a spectator. Ian Poulter generated the first roar of the day, taking the lead with his hole-in-one on the 16th. A little disappointed Ian didn't opt for his customary pink pants, but I suspect ...Gary Player is on my computer RIGHT NOW

The 72nd Masters Tournament tee’d off this morning at 8am. As the honorary starter for the second consecutive year, four-time Masters champion and golf legend Arnold Palmer got things going with a drive down the 1st fairway a little after 7:30am. Will this be the year Tiger tracks down the elusive Grand Slam? Here are your Round 1 Tee Times . Here are your Round 2 Tee Times . ...Gary Player at the Masters: Fade away, Black Knight

One of the semi-cool things about the Masters is the way it lets in the old-timers, past champions well past their primes who don’t stand a chance in hell of contending. It’s a link to the past, a historical showcase that’s fun to watch. Most of the time. Still, I think Gary Player shouldn’t be playing this year, his 51st. He’s obviously in it solely to ...The Gary Roberts Game

GARY! GARY! GARY! I don't even know where to start. I'm still in disbelief. That was quite possibly one of the most sublime sporting events I've ever witnessed. Ottawa acted like little brats, and we OWNED them. MAF put in one of the quietest shutouts you'll ever see. Malkin proved that he is quite possibly the most gifted player in the world - you just CANT knock him off the puck. The Sens ...50 Years Ago at the Masters: Fred Hawkins’ Near Win

What’s that saying? Something about no one remembers who finishes in second? Fifty years ago, in 1958, Arnold Palmer won his first Green Jacket. Palmer’s play and charisma combined with television forever changed professional golf. Arnie went on to three more Masters titles in 1960, 1962 and 1964. There’s a plaque honoring Palmer on the second nine at Augusta National. Last fall I talked to ...
