Newspapers Souring on NASCAR

... all but deemed the sport “OVER” and TV ratings dipped to worrisome levels in 2007. And this is no way to open 2008: the Tribune Company, which owns multiple newspapers (Chicago Tribune, Orlando Sentinel, etc), recently decided to eliminate national coverage of NASCAR, and the result was that the chain’s top car racing guy, Ed Hinton, quit. (Captain obvious: “Well, that’s an easy decision - NASCAR fans can’t read.”)

... The news that Ed Hinton is no longer with the Orlando Sentinel gives cause for a somewhat mixed reaction. While not feeling any compelling reason to share Marc's high dudgeon about it, 'tis duly noted Hinton is a superb NASCAR writer. That said, in the only direct communication I've ever had with the man he was a condescending jerk, so it's rather doubtful I'll be sending a card saying best wishes in your job search. ...
