Thanksgiving? More Like Nothanksgiving (I'm Talking About Bill Conlin)! Links8
Hey, Bill Conlin just wrote an article about Jimmy Rollins winning the MVP. Guess what? Squanto could have written a better article. That's right. I said it. Squanto. (I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, can't I read just one sabermetrically-inclined meta-commentary "comedy" blog without running into a Squanto joke? The answer: no, you cannot. Squanto.) Bill Conlin | Rollins' ... Conlin’s Losing Numbers
Published 11/23/2007 by Bill Baer at crashburnalley.com
... . Fire Joe Morgan has done a great job of dissecting his article . I sent Conlin an E-mail, but before I reveal those, I’d just like to point out the snippet of his article which deserves much ire. Despite his defensive contribution being backhanded by Red Sox front office stat man Bill James - baseball’s most influential cybergeek - the league’s managers and coaches awarded him a Gold Glove. Apparently, James decided that a Range Factor based on successful chances (putouts plus assists) times nine innings, divided by number of defensive innings played is more important than ...

Bill Conlin Probably Just Shouldn't Use Email At All [Bill Conlin]
Published 11/23/2007 by Leitch at Deadspin
... reporter, they come across as crotchety, anachronistic and old. It's not really fair to them -- it's not like bloggers are trashed by their colleagues every time they criticize a newspaper guy -- but these are the rules we play under. But hey, it happens: Their arrogance sometimes gets the best of them. Today's fun entry: The Philadelphia Daily News' Bill Conlin, who wrote a ridiculous column that mocked sabermatricians, a column that was amusingly taken apart Fire Joe Morgan. Crashburn Alley emailed Conlin, rather gently, all things considered, ...

Biggest Douche in the (Baseball) Universe
Published 11/23/2007 by stoeten at Drunk Jays Fans
... Conlin writes a shitty article (which Fire Joe Morgan has fantastically cut apart) that disputes Sabermetrics.Bill from CrashburnAlley-- a Phillies blog, mind you-- emails him asking him to explain how it's possible that Rollins had a better year than David Wright. Conlin insanely responds to this friendly questioning by asking Bill to compare careers and we'll see whose opinion is valid. Bill emails back. Conlin, it turns out, is a lazy, tactless douche who barely reads the email and responds with some nonsensical horseshit (including not just accusing Bill of ...

The Philly Daily News will tell you exactly what you can do with your “wishful fan numbers”
Published 11/23/2007 by Coley Ward at umpbump.com
... Paul Hagen agreed to do an interview with our site. But it turns out we went after the wrong Daily News writer. Because when it comes to providing good copy, columnist Bill Conlin has no peer. Yesterday, Conlin wrote a column about why Jimmy Rollins deserved the NL MVP Award. It was what we in the industry call a “blow job piece”. And it was, by any measure, pretty stupid. Not long after its publication, Fire Joe Morgan took the bait and picked Conlin’s column apart, sentence by moronic sentence. But today, the real ...

Bill Conlin, crotchety old man
Published 11/24/2007 by Adam J. Morris <info@lonestarball.com> at Lone Star Ball
If you've ever seen "The Sports Reporters," you've seen Bill Conlin, singlehandedly trying to perpetuate every negative stereotype about traditional sportswriters. And he's in fine form over the holidays. He had a column defending the selection of Jimmy Rollins as MVP, which is analyzed by FJM in their usual fashion. Most notable is Conlin's ranting about how statheads think Range Factor is more important than fielding percentage, even though true statheads haven't used RF since the mid-90s. Better yet, though, is ...

Bill Conlin was probably dropped as a child
Published 11/24/2007 by Ryan at The Victoria Times
... accidentally summed up the genre best with these words from a MacBeth soliloquy: “. . .a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. . . All right then. So, there's a difference between casual disgust and aggressive stupidity, and Mr. Conlin asserted his. Not only did he do a little defending of Hitler, but he also debased the grassroots cause of the American Revolution. Maybe bloggers aren't so bad. (If you're wondering what article caused this, well, Fire Joe Morgan eviscerated it already.) Labels: ...

Philadelphia Daily News’ Bill Conlin finds something positive about Adolf Hitler
Published 11/24/2007 by Maddog at Another Cubs Blog
... Fire Joe Morgan responded to Conlin’s initial article in typical fashion mocking pretty much everything he said. I don’t really know why I’m posting this. Just thought it deserved some attention. ...

Hitler Hated VORP
Published 11/28/2007 by redsock at The Joy of Sox
Philadelphia Daily News sportswriter Bill Conlin believes that Jimmy Rollins was the National League's Most Valuable Player. Rollins was decidedly not the MVP (as FJM points out), but that's not important. A Phillies fan who writes the Crashburn Alley blog emailed Conlin and made the case for David Wright of the Mets. Conlin was not very polite in his responses. Indeed, during the discussion, Conlin wrote: The only positive thing I can think of about Hitler's time on earth – I'm sure he would have eliminated all bloggers. In Colonial ...

Conlin's Losing Numbers

So, this is twice now that a journalist from the Philadelphia Daily News has been both tactless and unable to present a legitimate factual case for anything they’ve posited. I truly hope that Conlin isn’t a microcosm of American sports media — ignorant and close-minded. As for Wright over Rollins, the facts make it plain to see.

Obligatory MVP Coverage

The voters went 50-50 this year. They got one right, the other not so much. Your 2007 AL MVP is Alex Rodriguez , which makes sense because with all due respect to Detroit’s Magglio Ordonez, A-Rod dominated the league in every conceivable way. ...

Barry Bonds vs. Bill Conlin…

What struck me about it was the sheer hypocrisy. How often have we read rip jobs by writers about Barry Bonds as well as other media-unfriendly players? The biggest complaint about such ballplayers is their arrogance and how they treat the media as unworthy of their time or like the end of a canine’s digestive process on their shoes.
