It’s no secret Derrick Rose has struggled out the gate this season. And as Not Qualifed to Comment points out, part of it has to do with the fact he’s taking more jump shots this year.
His numbers from last year:
Percentage of shots taken close to basket: 51.4 percent, 56.3 percent made
Percentage of shots taken away from basket: 48.6 percent, 39.3 percent made
His numbers from this year:
Percentage of shots taken close to basket: 32 percent, 53.7 percent made
Percentage of shots taken away from basket: 68 percent, 41.2 percent made
As you can see from their number crunching, Rose is taking a whopping 20 percent more shots from the outside this year, and while ...

(Sorry, everybody. I know you’ve been waiting.) The first list of the season is built on a small sample size. There simply haven’t been enough games yet to make a concrete impression; which makes ranking players against each other difficult. In the preseason, it’s all about speculation.
