Phillies Breakfast Links, October 22, 2009: Back to Back to the World Series Edition
The Good Phight —
... to the dugout shot after his 3-run HR and Pedro Martinez pouring champagne in his mouth are two of my faves (don't worry jonk, neither one is the best Werth picture ever).
Phillies fans celebrate a night of good karma. Just in case you're out of town and were wondering how ugly and angry things got after the pennant clinch. Turns out: Not so much.
Bill Lyon: Savoring a night of triumph. He's right. This comes along like, well, never. Jayson Stark gives the context.
Bill Conlin: Manuel's champs have it ...
Phillies Return to World Series, Robots Taking Over Press Box & What ESPN Axe is Daulerio Grinding at Deadspin?
On the DL —
... The Phillies are going back to the World Series. As much as I expected this to happen, it’s still a bit surprising -- looking back at the whole year -- that any team could repeat as NL Champions. But if there was a team that could do it, it’s this Phillies squad. One might expect Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins to carry a team back to the playoffs, but it was guys like Jayson Werth, Carlos Ruiz, Shane Victorino, Raul Ibanez, Pedro Feliz, Cliff Lee and, yes, the bullpen, that pushed this team into the World Series. ...

... "Fo, Fi, Fi, Fo, Fi." Or, more easily understood, the Phillies have won their last five playoff series in four, five, five, four and five games, respectively. The Fightin' Phils have just five losses in the last five playoff series. If you're holding Game Six tickets for this year's World Series, you might want to think about selling them now before people realize just how dominant this Phillies team has been over the last two seasons. Take it away, ESPN's Jayson Stark: ...

... I would also like to congratulate Cliff Lee for once again looking like a Cy Young winner simply by moving down to the minor league level of professional baseball. I guess that's a compliment. Still bitter from the Red Sox sucking balls in the playoffs, but yeah, the minor league level of professional baseball has produced the World Fucking Champions. Keep hating, we'll keep winning. -If you haven't been reading Jayson Stark, you better start. The guy is a god damn poet: And then, on a gorgeous Wednesday night in the third ...
And now, for the bad news: What do we do about Cole?
phillyBurbs.com: Phils-ville RSS feed —
Sorry to burst the euphoric post-Pennant bubble, but we have to talk about the Cole Hamels dilemma. Just prior to the 5th inning of Game 5 with the Phils up 6-2, I turned to my pal Pete in our upper tank seats and I said, "If Cole makes it through the bottom of the order with a low pitch count here, he's got a chance to go six. I'll take it." But Cole Hamels - the 2008 World Series MVP who posted a 4-0 record and 1.80 ERA against the Brewers, Dodgers, and Rays last October - couldn't even make it out of the 5th. After getting Casey Blake to pop out, Cole Hamels surrendered a tracer of a pinch homer to that noted long ball threat Orlando Hudson and a double to Rafael Furcal. And ...
