Despite a 6-foot-1, 253-pound frame, Petit doesn't throw particularly hard with a fastball in the upper 80s, so he's largely regarded as a fringe starter who has been vulnerable to the long ball (19 in 89 2/3 innings last season). But he could benefit in that regard from pitching in Safeco Field and he comes at no cost, so obviously the Mariners figure he's worth a look.
