While many have attributed his benching and release to his slow start, the more likely reason for cutting Thomas was a vesting option in his contract that would guarantee him $10 million in 2009 if he collected 376 plate appearances in 2008. Supposedly, the Jays asked Thomas to take a lesser off-the-bench role to keep the option from vesting.
