Francisco Rodriguez doctoring the ball
4-2-2007, against the Rangers, K-Rod put something on the ball repeatedly during the 9th inning, and wasn t even subtle about it. First, I m going to admit these are bad pictures. Patches welcome, as they say in the open source world. Or suggestions on how to get better stills but any set of stills isn t going to be as good as watching it yourself: if you ve got mlb.tv, it s worth checking ...

Boy, this is something I just don't pay attention to during a game.  I'll bet it happens a lot more than I suspect.

Maybe I should buy that book?.....

Texas Rangers — ... Crazy conspiracy theorists? Not exactly. David Zumsteg of U.S.S. Mariner, who recently published a book entitled “The Cheater’s Guide to Baseball,” looked more closely at the incident yesterday with the aid of MLB.TV. His conclusion? K-Rod was cheating, and quite blatently. Zumsteg breaks down each pitch and includes various pictures of Rodriguez grabbing the brim of his cap, and also has this particularly telling quote:

If that is the case, one would expect him to allow more runs during the middle innings than the first few. Well, he s a quick chart of his 2006 runs by inning: Well, the second inning really skewers that data, doesn t it? All told, he allowed 57 runs in innings 1-3 and 58 runs in innings 4-6. Guess that hypothesis does not hold up. Shaggy Guerrier is such an absurd luxury. The Twins getting better production from their mop-up man than most teams get from their alternative set-up man. Michael Cuddyer showed why baseball is a funny game. He crushes a ball yesterday and hits into a double-play, then turns around and hits two ducksnorts for RBI singles today. Of course, karma also decided that a foul ball needed to split open his chin requiring surgery. Jason Bartlett looks like he needs a little more fire in the belly. In case you hadn t heard, Francisco Rodriguez is a

I'm wondering if, in a pinch, he'd be called on to strap on the gear and get behind the plate. Perhaps that's why Lou uses both of his catchers so liberally in late inning situations. Usually you will see a manager keep that backup catcher out of the game in case of injury. Lou routinely uses his as a pinch hitter in an effort to win the ballgame.
