I know this is nothing you probably haven't heard before, but I have a huge problem with discussing team drafts of individual players in evaluative terms - particularly for the high school guys.

My comment was cut-off for some reason, so let me paraphrase the explanation for the above comment...

Teams don't draft most players as finished products. Player development and scouting folks are generally aware of weaknesses and will try to address them in instructs, etc. Whether or not they are successful very often is another issue, but I don't think it's fair to label any draft as good/bad/overrated based on aspects of a player that are changeable.

True, but I'm generally skeptical of teams' abilities to make the correct changes. Also, a kid who has a really bad swing or really bad mechanics has to make all these changes during the offseason or (worse yet) during the season while trying to compete at a high level. I'd rather draft someone who is close to a finished product.

Well, even if some of the high school players "compete at a high level" right away, they are also usually involved in instructs and/or extended spring training - environments that are specifically designed to address deficiencies among players.

I also share your skepticism of teams' abilities to make correct changes, but I also think a) some teams are better at this than others and b) some kinds of changes are easier to make than others.

Carlos Gomez, whose articles I have been referencing for a while now and who has made a nice reputation for himself the past few years by analyzing the mechanics of pitchers and hitters, particularly those who are young hot prospects and also newly drafted prospects, recently came out with the DRAFTYs, his analysis of which prospects were the best in certain categories and which teams had the best draft in the 2007 draft. ...
