Wooden_U_Lykteneau FWIW -- The implication that Three Mile Island was ever unsafe is a common myth. As Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore once said "At the time, no one noticed Three Mile Island was a success story; the concrete containment structure prevented radiation from escaping into the environment. There was no injury or death among the public or nuclear workers." -
muddywater I get it. Julio Franco is middle-aged. -
Geoff Young He's older than Tracy Austin and Nadia Comaneci? Holy smokes, that blows my mind.
Nice work.

Chris P. T. Good stuff, and the music was pretty bad in '78. For the record, though, Horace Stoneham sold the Giants to Bob Lurie in '76.

ydorbkram How about getting some additional factoids. In 1982 what player had been in the Majors for the longest time and when did that he play in his first game. Other than Franco, when did the last player who played in 1982 retire and who was it?-
earthdyedred ydorbkram,
It looks like Jim Kaat's debut on August 2, 1959 made him the longest-tenured major leaguer in 1982, followed by Carl Yastrzemski (1961), Gaylord Perry, Willie Stargell, and Manny Mota (all 1962).
The last non-Franco player from 1982 was Jesse Orosco, pitching his last game on September 27, 2003. He beat Rickey Henderson by 8 days. Tim Raines was last seen in 2002, and the recent HOFers Gwynn and Ripken played into 2001.

nettles9 A very entertaining piece. Franco was a good ballplayer. This reminded me of the Bill James Baseball Abstract piece he wrote about Phil Niekro in the 1986 or 1987 edition, I think.
The only thing I would like to point out was that Bob Costas wasn't doing ABA games in 1978-- the ABA was disbanded in 1976.
Thanks.

In case you decided to do yourself a favor and stay away from everything Padres-related this weekend, Jake has a bad elbow. I fully expect his arm to be amputated by Thursday.
Jody Gerut seems intelligent.
Q&A with Estes.
You want someone to blame for this weekend? I blame Corey Brock for writing this prior to Saturday's game.
This in-depth piece on the Julio Franco era is awesome.

This has nothing to do with anything, but...I've been to the family house of the main guy in Chariots of Fire; it's a museum now. When he needed a hip replacement in his old age, he got the original ball-and-socket joint cast in silver and made it into a hood ornament. It actually looked pretty good.
Your article was the only logical place I could mention that on THT in the foreseeable future. :-)
