littlemgc +1I really like all the comments that I've read. As a Cubs fan, I am skeptical. I do want to add something; the reason why Gaudin was added was because of Beane's relationship with Hendry. Look at the trades those two have made in the past. Beane has always been upfront and it appears as though the two respect each other enough to be realistic and honest. Beane may have included Gaudin simply because he wants to keep this relationship in tact. Hendry is well aware of the possibility of a dud pitcher. Beane was smart in giving the Cubs insurance, if not for this year, but for years to come. -
wrigleyville_south Wow, you guys sound like experts..."Hardin" "...a young lefty pitcher who appears to be a #3 guy at best." Do you mean Gallagher, he throws from the right. "...third best pitcher on each staff is a lefty..." I'm pretty sure Dempster isn't a lefty.
Did you really need the whole staff to restate what has already been said about these deals, really?
-
mrrickyg I'm pretty sure Lilly is their third best pitcher.-
wrigleyville_south I'm pretty sure your wrong, look at the numbers or better yet watch a game. The comparison was made of Zambrano/Sabathia, Harden/Sheets, Parra/Lilly. Again Lilly isn't the 3rd best pitcher on that staff.

fifthof What's all the business about "throwing in Gaudin"? Gaudin was the A's sixth best RHP option in the bullpen, and they've got no reason to start him over any of their current rotation and have Gio Gonzalez in AAA. Gaudin has little if any value to the A's in terms of making them better on the field, and they'd have to pay him arbitration dollars for the last 2.5 years under their control. Maybe it was bad from an opportunity cost standpoint, but in terms of actual value to the A's in 2008-2010, doesn't having someone who can actually hit well against LHP (besides Mark Ellis and Frank Thomas) mean a lot more than another average RHP?
Maybe Gallagher will only be a "#3", but he has put up ace numbers throughout his minor league career, has been above average in his stint with Chicago in 2008, and is still 22. I don't even begin to see why people are so down on him.

studes I agree that the Gaudin aspect of the deal is one of opportunity cost. It may be that the A's didn't fully value someone on their staff cause he wasn't being valuable to them at the time. (or... maybe they did and I don't know what I'm talking about. Always possible). I'm not as high on Murton as you are. He's a singles hitter with a mediocre glove, IMO.
I also agree that "we" may be undervaluing Gallagher. Most scouting reports I've read project him as a #3 starter, but I'm always unsure exactly what scouts mean when they say that. #3 on a championship staff? #3 in terms of what, exactly?

fifthof Well, I don't think Murton is all that good, (I agree that I wouldn't want him as a regular since he is a singles hitter who doesn't add anything with the glove) but I like him as a platoon bat on the A's since they are loaded with LHB in the OF/DH/1B slots, and Murton is a better hitter than Brown or Davis (or Gaetti or Zeringue or Javier Herrera or any other RHB OF in the A's system other than Aaron Cunningham, who isn't there yet). It's not that Murton is especially good for the piece that he is, it's just that he's a piece the A's have none of (or Emil Brown of) whereas Gaudin is sixth or seventh on the depth chart as either a starter or a reliever.

... GMs Jim Hendry and Billy Beane.
Susan Slusser says Beane never inquired on the Cubs' top draft pick from 2007, third baseman Josh Vitters. She says the A's did not consider it appropriate to ask for a player they had no chance of getting.
Slusser adds that "there is thought among other clubs that the A's might deal Matt Murton or Eric Patterson."
Authors at the Hardball Times did a roundtable about both trades.
The Royals spoke internally about Sabathia, but ...

... for a team that is eliminated on game 163 rather than game 63. Would I rather see the Padres win a World Series than not? Of course. But in general, I am content with the team being “consistently competitive.”
Great stuff, as usual, from Dave Studeman’s weekly column. Interestingly, a fliner — a BIP between a line drive and a fly ball – is the second most valuable type of in-play ball (from the hitter’s perspective, of course).
Here’s a breakdown of the Sabathia and Harden deals from a bunch of THT writers. ...

Escobar, Gamel and Gillespie earned a collective Prospect of the Day honors from Baseball America: Also mention in the article is Jordan Zimmerman, a pitcher in the Nationals farm system who attended… can you guess? You got it, UW-Stevens Point. - Guillermo Mota apparently isn’t going to be released (yet): I’m pulling for Motahead to get things worked out, but if he keeps this up – it might be best to send him, his epic salary and his blue glove packing. - The Hardball Times discusses the Rich Harden and CC Sabathia trades. - Tony La Russa ...
