... Neil Paine of Basketball-Reference.com: “Exactly how good have the Lakers been so far? Well, here at Basketball-Reference.com, one of our favorite tools for measuring team quality is something we call the “Simple Rating System“. It’s basically a team’s average point differential per game, but also adjusted for strength of schedule, and we’ve already proven that it’s one of the best predictors of future performance available. Through 13 games, the Lakers’ SRS is an eye-popping 14.00, easily tops in the league (Cleveland is 2nd with 9.64). Just for comparison’s sake, last ...

... Basketball-Reference.com: I probably don’t need to tell you this, but I’m going to anyway: the Los Angeles Lakers are torching the NBA right now. They’re currently 12-1, they rank 3rd in the league in offensive efficiency with an ORtg of 111.4, and they have the NBA’s best defense (96.5 DRtg) — better even than the Boston Celtics, whose stifling D was one of the major reasons the Lakers lost in the NBA Finals this past June. With Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum in the fold full-time this season, we knew they’d be a formidable team, but I think ...

... notes: One more note on just how hot the Lakers have been so far this season:
Basketball-reference.com (my personal favorite stats site) has developed something called the “Simple Rating System” to figure out how good teams are. (And, this system over time has proved the axiom that simple is better.) Basically, you figure out how much teams are winning their games by (point differential) and adjust that for strength of schedule.
So far, the Lakers SRS score is 14. Second place in the NBA right now is Cleveland at 9.64. It gets better: ...

... ) abused the Lakers defense and penetrated at will. It was alarming to see just how many open threes Kidd and Terry were given in this game - I counted at least six. Basically I think the Lakers are just too good offensively - they score points so easily and have too much fun doing it - that they won’t and can’t care about defense enough. Not to take anything away from their start to the season which hasn’t just been impressive, it’s been historic. ...

... SRS: 12.14 (2nd) Hollinger Ranking: 111.0 (2nd) As recently as a week ago, I was all ready to anoint the Lakers the favorites. In hindsight, that was premature. The Lakers' road trip wasn't exactly a bad one--L.A. went 2-1, losing only on a game-winning putback--but nor was it as impressive as the start that had Lakers fans thinking about making a run at the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls' 72-10 record. In late November, Neil Paine of the must-read Basketball-Reference.com Blog noted that the Lakers were posting the fourth-best opening-month SRS of any team in NBA history ...
