Paul Heyman is a ballin' bad ass, the man who both Stone Cold Steve Austin and Mick Foley name in their autobiographies as being the Martin Scorcese to their Robert DeNiros. Actually, that was the line used by Scott "Raven" Levy, but no one remembers him anymore. The point is that Heyman is credited by Austin and Foley, and countless others, as being different from the cookie cutter writers and producers in the pro wrestling game, and his free thinking and open communication with the wrestlers made stars out of a lot of people. Heyman helped them find the ability to become top shelf ballers themselves.
Heyman's gone from the pro wrestling scene now. Legendary broadcaster and inside power broker Jim "J.R." Ross said in his blog that Heyman was writing a couple of movie scripts. Heyman has also launched a web-only television show on NewsCorp's UK SUN website, which is in the process of being the launching pad for a worldwide broadband television network. Hence, the UK Sun doesn't even want to be called "UK" anymore. Just The Sun.
So Heyman hooked up with noted Hong Kong studio exec Peter E. Poon and a New York Hi-Def baller himself Mitchell Stuart, who produces a music show online called "Stripped: Raw and Real" and they put together a show called "The Heyman Hustle."
According to a press release sent out by someone whose name doesn't matter at the Sun, The Heyman Hustle "is a weekly webisode that tries to point out the fact that people on the streets can have extraordinary tales to tell, while the hyped-up personalities who are the center of the frenzy of today's Tabloid Society only mask ordinary people with extraordinary publicists."
Yeah, I don't know what that means, either. All I know is, the Hustle has been entertaining 5 straight weeks. I don't know what to make of it, except I like it every time. This week, Heyman closes the show with a moment he shares with stuffy half-dead "Ultimate Inside Theatre Guy" James Lipton, the 2,000 year old host of "Inside The Actors Studio." Heyman hustles Lipton while making fun of himself. It's quite the moment.
I think the thing I like about the Hustle the most is that it doesn't take itself seriously. It can be serious, but it feels like Heyman is just having fun, bringing you 5 or 6 minutes of a entertainment to give you a laugh or two on a Monday.
Check out this week's episode, with Tony Nominated Broadway star Laura Bell Bundy, Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, Jeremy Piven of HBO's Entourage, the always-great Terrence Howard, and the Heyman-Lipton moment at the end. You'll laugh your BallHype off.
