Today SI’s Grant Wahl published his annual January synopsis of the eight teams that he feels have sufficient chops to win the national title in April. He likes to point out that in the eight previous years of doing this article, he’s been correct in seven of them ( the one miss: 2003 with Syracuse ). FYI, here is a spreadsheet of his Magic Eight picks for each year since its ...

BBTF hands out some Gold Gloves. Listen, Buster. Listen. He listened! The Post not making much sense. Carl echoes the same thoughts, except Carl is joking. Sheehan's '08 breakout candidates. Duke or UNC? Shaughnessy at it again. Jack Morris for the HoF? In that case, how about Rob Nen? Grant Wahl doesn't include UNC in his "Magic Eight". His reasoning behind this is questionable (see update).

... thing, picking the eight teams he feels can win a title (with a great critique from Rush the Court). He boasts that the national title winner has come out of that group all but once (2003) since 2000, but with eight teams, I'm not all that impressed. Instead, I'm going to lay out a formula that I have long equated with NCAA success and see which teams fit that mold. This is all based on who is best equipped to win six NCAA Tournament games in row. Nothing else. ...

The Heels come home with a one point win
mvn.com 1/18/2008 — North Carolina (18-0, 3-0 ACC) went down to Georgia and played with the Yellow Jackets (7-9, 0-3 ACC) and escaped with a nail biter of a one point win, 83 to 82. If you think that isn’t really so monumental, then you probably don’t realize that this is the first time that head coach Roy Williams has won at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
Syracuse destroys Rutgers 81 to 59
mvn.com 1/18/2008 — Syracuse played a good game, bringing their record to 13 and 5 (3-2 in the Big East), as they took care of Rutgers (8-10, 0-5 BE) by the score of 81 to 59. This is the positive side of the story, the negative is that it was Rutgers and it was a home game and if the Orange had lost this game “panic” mode would have hit Central New York faster than Jonny Flynn can run down the court.
Bipolar Spartans Making a Bad Habit Out of Blowing Leads
mvn.com 1/18/2008 — Has any team ever been as inconsistent as this year's Michigan State Spartans. They have coupled flashes of national champion quality basketball with flashes of barely NIT quality basketball. So what do we make of Izzo's squad when March comes rolling in?

evilmonkeycma.blogspot.com 1/18/2008 — Maryland defeats UNC. This is a huge lift for Maryland, and lessens the aura of dominance surrounding the Tar Heels. However, for all intents and purposes this loss did nothing to the Tar Heels, as they maintained their seeding in many seed lists ...
