Are the A's really moving prospects to make room for a proven vet???
I am kinda shocked by the move.... maybe Beane trades him mid season for a new crop of prospects or something Oakland Athletics-ish like that.
Can't wait to see what our first move will be. All hail the ninja

The Rangers' Julio Borbon worked deep counts and is very fast; if the patience is real he could be huge for them.

Is Holliday enough to lift A's

... . And while it's a deal that nobody seems to have expected, the early reviews are positive, at least from Oakland's side. Here's Athletics Nation : Oakland's hitters were horrible last season. There are 14 teams in the American League. The A's finished 14th in runs, hits, doubles, batting average and slugging percentage. They finished 13th in on-base percentage. Thanks mostly to Cust, they finished fourth in walks, but walks are largely irrelevant if you've got the lowest batting average in the league. All of which leaves a great deal of room for improvement. Holliday in ...
The Matt Holliday Trade: Down in Denver, Overjoyed in Oakland

... Chronicle: Even though there are rumors that the A's will broaden their 2009 payroll beyond the subsistence level, it is hard to imagine that Holliday is more than a one-year rental at best, and maybe even trade-deadline bait. It is almost impossible to conceive that Beane and Boras could agree on a longer-term deal that would net Holliday (and Boras) maximum dollars, especially given that the A's are no more likely to contend in 2009 than they were in 2008. Blez, Athletics Nation: I love the trade. (Carlos) Gonzalez might turn into the ...

Trying to Figure Out Why Oakland Traded For Matt Holliday

... been a closer in his 4 year career. We know that Beane considers closers mostly as trading chips, and this is just another chapter in that history.
Second is left handed pitcher Greg Smith, who was actually the only A to make more than 30 starts with the club this year, going 7-16 with a slightly below average 4.16 ERA, and worse, 87 walks, third in the AL. He's only 24 though, and there's not a lot of pitching in the minor leagues ready soon. It seems peculiar, but Athletics Nation seems fine with it, calling Smith a nibbler
