Ron Santo Snubbed By Veterans Committee ... Again
Bleed Cubbie Blue —
... The Hall of Fame Veterans Committee failed, once again, to acknowledge one of the top ten (at the very least) third basemen in baseball history by passing over Ron Santo for induction, in a vote announced on the Hall of Fame website today. Santo got 60.9% of the vote. ...

Sliding Into Home: A Yankees Blog —
Earlier today I wrote a post about a Dugout Central report about Joe Torre being elected into the Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee. Well it turns out that report was wrong. The only player that the Veteran's Committee elected was former Yankees and Indians second baseman Joe Gordon. Here are the official voting results from the Hall of Fame: Results of the 2008 Pre-1943 Players Ballot (nine votes needed for election): Gordon (10 votes, 83.3 percent), Allie Reynolds (eight, 66.7 percent), Wes Ferrell (six, 50.0 percent), Mickey Vernon (five, 41.7 percent), Deacon White (five, 41.7 percent), Bucky Walters (4, 33.3 percent), ...

Joe Gordon, the skipper of the 1969 Royals, was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame today by the Veterans Committee for his accomplishments as a player. Hall makes just one call

... takes only a few odd decisions to throw the entire process into question. Particularly when the committee actually meets (as this one apparently did). That opens up the possibility of horse-trading and various forms of cajoling, just like the bad old days of the Veterans Committee, the members of which happily elected their old cronies, most of whom dragged down the standards of the institution. The most qualified player on the pre-1943 ballot was probably Bill Dahlen. According to the Hall's news release , Dahlen got fewer than three votes. Looks like we're back in the bad ...

Prospectus Hit and Run: The Bleeding Edge of a Whole New Hall Game by Jay Jaffe
Baseball Prospectus —
December 9, 2008 Prospectus Hit and Run The Bleeding Edge of a Whole New Hall Game by Jay Jaffe The Baseball Hall of Fame announced its 2008 Veterans Committee voting results , and for the first time since 2001, the VCwhich has changed constitutions several times since thenelected a new member to the Hall. Alas, that player was not longtime Cubs third baseman Ron Santo , who has long been stumped for in this space and elsewhere. Instead, it was Joe Gordon getting the call, the second baseman for the Yankees (1938-1943, 1946) and Indians (1947-1950). As you may have noticed, I did not run my usual JAWS-related breakdown ...

Still No Hall of Fame Love for Dick Allen
The Big Lead —
The Hall of Fame Veterans Committee allegedly has forgotten more about baseball than any of us know, thus granting them authority to circumvent the undoubtedly full-proof system in place by electing an overlooked peer with 75% of their votes. Their choice this year was Joe Gordon (83.3%), a very good hitter by normal standards and excellent for a second baseman. Ron Santo was the near miss with 60.9% of the vote. Last among the post-1942 players with seven votes was Dick “Richie” Allen.
Allen’s numbers don’t seem spectacular historically. He was a .292/.378/.534 career hitter, giving him a ...
