The Biz of Baseball: Brown: The Official “Red Sox Nation”? Stop the Bus, I Need Off
Published 4/9/2008 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
The Biz of Baseball: Brown: The Official “Red Sox Nation”? Stop the Bus, I Need Off or as Maury says..."Welcome to the Dayton Peace Accords, Official Red Sox Nation style.” I have to admit, when the news that the Red Sox were going to establish an official “Red Sox Nation” President, I thought it was fun. “Why not?” I asked. It shows that the Red Sox don’t take themselves too seriously, and at the same time, creates some fan comradery. You want to have Tim Russert moderate a debate on NESN among candidates for President of Red Sox Nation, so be it. Sounded campy and fun. That ...

The Baseball Vatican?

Yup, this “nation within a nation”, with churches and consulates spread out around the world has infected Redsox Nation.  Since Keith Woolner easily switched allegiance to the Indians, does this mean he has been excommunicated?  In two hundred years, there will be peace in Palestine, but Redsox Nation and Yankee World will cause a civil war, if not a coup.

L-I-N-K-S: Bill Buckner Returns to Fenway, Red Sox Nation Take Themselves Too Seriously, Most Awesome Ump Bump of All Time
Published 4/9/2008 by Alan Hull at Baseball Mastermind
You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video Bill Buckner returns to Fenway, throws out ceremonial first pitch in the home opener. [Sports By Brooks] I saw footage of him following the game, teary-eyed and speaking to the media: “I really had to forgive, not the fans of Boston, per se, but in my heart, I had to forgive the media for what they put me and my family through. I’ve done that, and I’m over that and I’m just happy.” It’s sad how one mistake, a simple mistake can follow a man for life. I’m happy for ...

ENOUGH, ALREADY: We were holding an impromptu staff meeting in the back of the press box at Fenway Park in the middle of the eighth inning Tuesday afternoon, so we missed what most of you saw: Neil Diamond doing a live-on-tape version of Sweet Caroline, with Tom Werner, Wally The Green Monster and others serving as Pips to Diamond's Gladys Knight. The You Tube clip fails to show the post-song patter between Diamond and Werner, which went something like this: Werner: "Gee, Neil, we'd love to have you perform at Fenway Park." Diamond: "Gee, Tom, are you asking me?" Werner: ...

Republican and Democratic National Convention Leaders Have Friendly Wager on NHL Playoffs
Published 4/10/2008 by Maury Brown at The Biz of Hockey :: Business of Sports Network
The National Hockey League's Stanley Cup Playoffs begin this week, and the cities hosting the 2008 Republican and Democratic National Conventions will be watching the games closely when the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche face off. The two leaders planning the political conventions agreed to a friendly wager on the series. Republican National Convention President and CEO Maria Cino and Democratic National Convention Committee (DCCC) CEO Leah Daughtry agreed to the stakes. The losing city's convention team will send a "taste" of that city's local delicacy for the winning city's convention staff to enjoy. If the Wild win, the DNCC will send the Republican ...

Emails Show Sonics Ownership Pushed as Early as April '07 to Relocate to Oklahoma City
Published 4/10/2008 by Maury Brown at The Biz of Basketball :: Part of the Business of Sports Network
In a clear sign that the current Seattle SuperSonics ownership has always intended to relocate the team to Oklahoma City, emails from minority ownership to co-owner Clay Bennett show that as early as April 2007, and possibly earlier, plans were being put in place to move the team, despite public communications to the contrary. As reported by the Seattle Times: On April 17 last year, team co-owners Clay Bennett, Aubrey McClendon and Tom Ward talked about whisking the Sonics away to Oklahoma as soon as possible even though it would mean breaching the KeyArena lease, according to the city's motion filed in U.S. District Court ...

Walsh: Isiah Thomas To Coach End of Season. Any Changes Before Draft
Published 4/10/2008 by Maury Brown at The Biz of Basketball :: Part of the Business of Sports Network
Isiah Thomas was pushed out of his position as Knicks president last week by Donnie Walsh, and now his time as coach may be numbered, as well. Walsh said that Thomas will remain as coach of the Knicks through the regular season, but added that if any changes to the coaching position were to take place, it would be before the NBA Draft. As reported by The AP: Walsh insists he hasn't decided on Thomas' future with the team, but the Knicks' 23-56 record clearly works against the coach. "You can say I have an open mind as far as any conversation I'm going to have," Walsh said. "I still don't think we've played well, there's a lot of things I ...

When Sports Becomes a Small Matter: A Child and Autism

There is no category for this topic here. There is baseball, basketball, hockey, football, and auto racing, but there is nothing for topics of far more importance. This, being my personal blog, has been about commentary on sports. It has never been about my views on matters outside of that. And, it has never been a place where you would find anything personal. Today, that changes as I find myself placed in a new cause. It is one that touches myself, my family, and as I will outline below, a growing and alarming number of families. Over the past year, our youngest son has not been developing at the rate that most children do. At first, we chalked ...

Minnesota Wild Sold To Craig Leipold

The NHL Board of Governors on Thursday approved the sale of the Minnesota Wild to former Nashville Predators owner, Craig Leipold. The approval caps three months of negotiations with now former owner, Bob Naegele Jr. As reported by the St. Paul Pioneer Press: Leipold said he would own 51 percent of the team and act as its governor, but that he has taken on Minnesota native Phil Falcone as a general partner. Falcone is a former Harvard hockey player from Chisholm and senior marketing director for Harbinger Capital Partners of New York. "I am just totally elated," Leipold said. "It's been a long process."
