MLB Bridges Gap Via Ceremonial Draft
The Glory of Baseball —
... the idea is one that people across baseball are praising. Winfield proposed having a "ceremonial" draft on June 5 for surviving players from the Negro Leagues. The draft would be a way for Major League Baseball to connect its past with its present, he said. "You would truly bring the past into the present," said Winfield, a Hall of Famer and vice president with the Padres. "You would change these people's lives. You would change baseball history -- American history. "I thought it would be poignant, timely and appropriate, and I thought we could do it." ...

Xavier Avery Going, Going . . .Gone?
Dawg Sports —
... Good luck to Xavier in the draft (which begins this afternoon at 2 p.m. and can be followed live at the MLB website ). While losing football signees usually drives me a little batty, I always felt that Avery was a much better prospect in baseball than football, and has been open about the fact that his heart is really on the diamond. Plus this relieves a little scholarship congestion resulting from a big class last season followed by what should be smaller classes in 2009 and 2010. This should be a really special day for him and I hope he enjoys it. ...

Draft Day
Scott Proctor's Arm - A New York Yankees Blog —
Today is draft day, called by some to be one of the most exciting days in baseball. I'll be the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about the draft. That said, the draft begins at 2:00 and you can follow everything here and watch the first round coverage on ESPN2.

A great place to follow the action is MLB.com's Draft Central. The Draft Tracker application has info on hundreds of eligible players, and will track (duh) every pick. There's video on many of the top prospects, and plenty of fluff-filled feature articles to keep you busy. ...

... second-worst record in team history after 60 games. Think about it--for a franchise that was historically terrible, only once (1978) have they been this bad after 60 games. Good lord. Here's how bad it is--I was just told that they played McLaren's tirade on the Howard Stern Show. When you're mocked along with the likes of Underdog Lady and Elephant Boy...well, it can't get much worse than that. Luckily, the rebuilding begins right now. The 2008 MLB draft just started, the Mariners should make their pick about 1pm.

Da Draft...pfpasdjlaf Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Amazin' Avenue —
... I can vouch for the fact that Alex did his homework on this one: he spent many days compiling scouting reports, poring over video and devouring every bit of information he could get his hands on. All told, he had notes on several hundred players and was as prepared as anyone I've ever seen. He did a phenomenal job in analyzing not just the Mets' picks, but most of the other picks in the first couple of rounds.
If that's not enough for you, there's more coverage at MLB.com, ESPN.com and Baseball America.
