Wakefield loves pitching indoors and the Tokyo Dome was no exception. Wake pitched 5 2/3 innings only giving up 1 earned run while striking out 3. He had no control issues; only walking one batter. Cash did well catching the knuckler and went 1-3 at the plate. Drew powered the Sox with a grand slam, his second HR in 2 games. Rich Harden is Back

But will he stay healthy? The oft-injured A's right-hander dominated the Red Sox over 6 innings in the A's 5-1 win in Japan this morning. Harden struck out 9 and limited the Sox to 3 hits. Manny Ramirez belted a solo home run for the Sox only run. And of course Manny stood there for 20 minutes admiring it. We continue to wonder why no one puts Manny on his ass for this classlessness. Jon Lester struggled with his control in 4 innings of work, allowing 4 runs. Emil Brown blasted a 3-run homer off of him in his 2nd game as a member of the A's. Chris Denorfia ...

Sentimental performances. A rebuilding of bridges burnt long ago. And an epic performance from those playing the game, to boot. Let me Pitch to Manny
Published 4/13/2008 by Mantlemurcer at My Pinstripes
It was words to that effect that doomed the Yankees yesterday. Clinging to a 2-1 lead over the Boston Red Sox in the bottom of the 6th, Joe Girardi went out to the mound speak with Mike Mussina (1-2). The Red Sox had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs and Manny Ramirez at the plate. Ramirez had already homered in the 4th inning, but with 1st Base open and Kevin Youkilis on deck, Mussina chose to pitch to Ramirez. It was a big mistake. Ramirez's 2-run double to right-center put the Red Sox ahead for good and they want on to a 4-3 win in Fenway Park. But ...

Sunday Bloody Sunday

Already knowing you have to get up before you know it to go to work on Monday makes Sunday night's sports viewing rather tense. How many times have you gone to bed angry after watching Sunday night football? Or had your hockey team lose in overtime and then your baseball team lose to their hated rivals. It was not a good Sunday night. Phil Hughes (0-2) had his second straight poor outing as the Yankees lost their second straight game to the Red Sox, 8-5. The Yankees continued to fail in the clutch, and once again there were some questionable decisions by Joe Girardi. Hughes threw 65 pitches in last ...

As good as Chien-Ming Wang was in 2-hitting the Red Sox in Fenway Park last Friday, that's how bad he was last night. The Wanger was handed 3-1 and 7-3 leads, but couldn't hold either. As a matter of fact he stood to be the losing pitcher when the Red Sox went ahead 9-7, but the Yankees bullpen outpitched their New England brethren and the Yankees escaped with a 15-9 victory. The Yankees had built those early leads with the help of some long balls in the 1st inning. Bobby Abreu smacked a 2-run homer, his second, and Alex ...

Milestone Tracker- 5/19/2008

Well, I'm finally back with this again has baseball is in full swing. The last time I did Milestone Tracker ; 'Barroid' Bonds "passed" Hank Aaron's all-time Home Run record. This year, he is still a free agent. Ken Griffey, Jr. is getting closer to the 600 Home Run mark and Jim Thome passed 500 late last season (if I remember correctly). Now since this is a new season we will start fresh but we need to add two hitters that are close to milestones to start. Reds CF Ken Griffey, Jr. and Red Sox LF/DH Manny Ramirez - I put these two in the same category because they are both close to home run milestones (and were on my last Milestone Tracker list) ...

Since I want to be careful how I want to post the Milestone Tracker, I've decided to post it every month and not every two weeks. Red Sox LF Manny Ramirez joined the 500 Home Run club earlier in the month vs. the Orioles. Now on to more Milestones that we could track (Note: Any fan that wants to send me a Milestone of a player on their team or any team, just e-mail me at pmfcaliber2003@yahoo.com and I'll be sure to put him up next month). Mets Go Home On Winning Note, Top Rockies 3-1
Published 6/22/2008 at Mets Merized Online - A Mets Blog For Real Mets Fans!
Game Highlights Mets did what they needed to do and took the rubber game of the series 3-1 today at Colorado. They continue to look nothing like the team that was floundering the last time they were on the west coast.  Mike Pelfrey pitched 5 2-3 shutout innings to pick up his fourth win. He allowed only three hits but walked five and it was his second straight win. Pelfrey hasn't lost a game since May 26th against Florida. Every time he takes the mound he is looking more and more like the first round pick we expected. Carlos Beltran delivered the big blow in this game, a 2-run homer in the third to put the Mets up 3-0. It was the 11th homer ...

It was an up and down day and night of baseball in the Bronx and Flushing yesterday as the Yankees and Mets played a two stadium, non-doubleheader. After getting humiliated 15-6 at home, the Yankees proved that payback is a bitch, clobbering Pedro Martinez at Shea Stadium en route to a 9-0 win and their first victory against the Mets this season. The day didn't start out to promising as Carlos Delgado set a Mets record with 9 RBI. He homered twice, including a grand slam as starter Dan Giese and relievers ...

Yankees Outlast Mets and Rain
Published 6/29/2008 by Mantlemurcer (noreply@blogger.com) at My Pinstripes
Yesterday's Yankees-Mets contest was delayed at the start and in the middle of the 6th inning by rain, but there was no stopping Andy Pettitte as he pitched the Yankees to a 3-2 win at Shea Stadium. A 57-minute stoppage didn't prevent Pettitte from returning in the bottom of the 6th, and though he gave up a solo home run to David Wright, he finished the inning and picked up his 9th win of the season. A low scoring game was expected with Pettitte and Mets ace Johan Santana on the mound and that's exactly what the fans got. The Mets ...

Perez Leaves Yankees Left Out

Oliver Perez has always had the ability to be a successful pitcher in the major leagues. But whether it be his head, his arm, his heart, who knows what else, he has always had trouble keeping it together. Sandy Koufax one minute, Steve Trout the next. But not when Perez pitches against the Yankees. He dominated them once again yesterday at Shea Stadium as the Mets salvaged the finale of the three games played at home. In an attempt to offset the left-handed throwing Perez, Joe Girardi stacked the lineup ...

Maine did not look confident out on the mound, he seemed like he didn't have control of his pitches. He walk two in the first which set up the inning for the Cardinals. Tony Armas Pitches Well; Mets Win 7-4
Published 7/2/2008 at Mets Merized Online - A Mets Blog For Real Mets Fans!
Game Highlights: The game didn't start off well for the Mets as they were taken out of a scoring opportunity after Endy Chavez was caught in a rundown. Tony Armas didn't start off well either, but man did he buckle down. Armas allowed two runs in the first inning, and then allowed two runs in the remaining five innings. The Mets needed a spot starter, and Armas was it. The offense was alive throughout the game, and were finally lucky too. Ramon Castro had a big night driving in three runs. Many believed Schneider would get the start, but Castro delivered. David Wright had a good night going 3-for-4 with a solo ...

Talk about heart breaking man. In another dissappointing loss the Mets showed some really good fight out there today but they just couldn’t get the help they needed from their pitching to win the game. It seemed as though Pedro picked up where he left off from his last start giving up 4 runs in the first inning. He did however settle down going 5 innings giving up 5 runs on 7 hits and striking out 4. Could've been better and hopefully it will be on his next start. The Mets bats were in full action and could’ve even done a little better but almost every starter except for Chavez and Martinez had a hit last night. Easley was on ...

Mets Beat The Phillies 4-2 In A Marathon Thriller
Published 7/7/2008 at Mets Merized Online - A Mets Blog For Real Mets Fans!
The Highlights I'm physically exhausted and emotionally drained, but I'm also happy to say the Mets gutted out a tough one and beat the Phillies 4-2 in an extra-innings, 7 hour and 45 minute marathon in a rain-soaked Citizens Bank Park. Oliver Perez was absolutely fantastic throwing seven scoreless innings and allowing just four hits while striking out six batters. It's his second straight solid outing and since ditching Rick Peterson he's looking sharp. Carlos Beltran put the Mets up on the board with a solo shot among his three hits. He drove in two runs and has his average up to a respectable .264. Jose Reyes had big day ...

The Mets Hang On And Edge Out The Phillies 10-9
Published 7/8/2008 at Mets Merized Online - A Mets Blog For Real Mets Fans!
The Highlights Pedro Martinez started and pitched effectively into the sixth inning to earn the win and improve his record to 3-2. He pitched into the sixth inning and allowed five hits, three walks and two runs while notching six strikeouts. This was definitely a move in the right direction. The game started out as blowout, but it eventually turned into slugfest with the Mets hanging on for the 10-9 win. The Mets initially had a 10-1 lead, but the Phillies kept chipping away and battled back to almost win it in the ninth. The keyword being almost. It wasn't pretty, but it was a win... a well deserved win. The Mets bats exploded for 17 hits ...

The Mets have now won 5 in a row and tied their biggest winning streak this season with a 5-0 win over the Giants tonight. I really do not want to sound cocky but this game looked fairly easy for the Mets pitchers and defensive play. Santana finally got a win after 6 previous starts and besides the minor 3 walks and 3 hits, cruised through the NOT SO Giant line up striking out 5. He left fairly early in the game due to a rain ...

Steve Politi of the Star Ledger put it best, Yankee Stadium had the last laugh last night. The American League finally prevailed in 15 innings, 4-3. Michael Young's sac fly brought home Justin Morneau with the winning run at 1:37 a.m., some 4 hours and 50 minutes after play began. We were sacked out by the 11th inning, but would have continued to watch had the game started, at oh 8:00. You didn't think they were going to roar into October with a 71 game winning streak, did you?? I didn't think so... The Mets lost for the first time in over two weeks, and their longest winning streak in 17 years has finally come to an end. It was a nice ride! Cincy beat the Mets 5-2 tonight in game that was over in 2 1/2 hours. John Maine took the loss and went 4.2 innings and gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks, and he had 5 whiffs. Usually, four of a kind wins every time! John Maine never made it out of the fifth inning again and I'm starting to get a little concerned about him. The Yankees won the first game of the big three game series at Fenway Park, 1-0, tonight behind outstanding pitching by Joba Chamberlain and a huge five out save by Mariano Rivera. The Yankees couldn't get more than one clutch hit off of Red Sox starter Josh Beckett, but the Red Sox couldn't do much of anything in 7 innings against Chamberlain. Chamberlain cruised, with the help of a Melky Cabrera diving catch and a Robinson Cano started double play, through the first 3 innings, before running into a two ...

The Mets crushed the Cardinals by the score of 7-2 at Shea Stadium tonight in the first game of the weekend series. They are now nine games over .500 and coupled with the Phillies loss tonight, the Mets now have a full two game lead in first place. Mike Pelfrey started and was impressive once again, limiting the Cardinals to just one run. He continues to ooze with confidence and his command was a marvel to watch tonight. Whenever he was in trouble, he turned up the heat and worked out of it like a savvy veteran. His ERA now stands at 3.67. Yo Pelf... outstanding job dude! The Yankees had practically everything go their way on Saturday as they pounded the Red Sox bullpen to clinch the 3-game series with a 10-3 win. Andy Pettitte gave his teammates a big lift, allowing 1 earned run over 6 innings, shaking off a two run 1st inning for his 12th win of the season. Robinson Cano continued his post All-Star break tear with 3 hits including a home run. And there was retribution. Sidney Ponson reinforced the Yankees need for a back end of the rotation starter when he got his ass kicked by the Boston Red Sox last night. You could see this one coming. The Yankees had taken the first two games of the three game set and Sunday's night game was delayed one hour by rain. By the 4th inning, the game's conclusion was already determined. The final tally was 9-2. The loss snapped the Yankees 8-game winning streak, and increased the Red Sox Wild Card lead to 2 games. The Yankees didn't lose any ground to 1st place Tampa Bay, ...

Neither team really the game locked until the bottom of the ninth. The Mets capitalized on the mistakes of the Marlins and vice-versa. It seemed both teams capitalized on the opposition's mistakes. The offense wasn't really there for the Mets tonight, well not like the past few nights. Fernando Tatis continued his hot bat going 2-4 with a triple and 2 RBI's. All Met starters had a hit except Jose Reyes who went 0-for-5. Damion Easley had two hits. Background Dan Warthen must have done some voodoo or something. Or better yet just changed his mechanics, because Oliver Perez has been pitching like an ace since Rick Peterson was given the boot. Tonight, Perez was grooving through the Marlins lineup. He went six solid innings allowing only a run and five hits. He walked three, but struck out five. With tonight's game, he lowered his ERA to 4.02. Since July 6th, Oliver has given up five runs in 26.2 innings. That's a whopping 1.72 ERA. All three runs scored on solo homeruns to Kaz Matsui, pitcher Brandon Backe, and Carlos Lee. Everyone thought the bullpen would have at least another new face after the trade deadline, but thing didn't work out that way. Early on this game looked like similar to many other games the Mets had played this season.. They got on a mediocre pitcher early, but let him settle down and keep his team in the game long enough for the Mets bullpen to blow it. Well, not tonight. ...

Yankees Knuckle Under the Pressure
Published 8/27/2008 by Mantlemurcer (noreply@blogger.com) at My Pinstripes
The way last night's Yankees-Red Sox game started out, it looked like whomever batted last would win the game. Only thing is, someone forgot to tell the Yankees. Lead by Alex Rodriguez, they failed in the clutch, Jason Giambi made a huge mental mistake, and Andy Pettitte picked the wrong night to have a miserable performance. The end result was a 7-3 Yankees loss that dropped them six games back of the Red Sox in the wildcard race. The top of the order did everything they could in setting the table for the big guns that followed, but they ...

The Giambino Saves the Day
Published 8/28/2008 by Mantlemurcer (noreply@blogger.com) at My Pinstripes
Jason Giambi has been the Giamnoshow in big spots for over a month, but today he single-handedly provided the Yankees offense in a must needed 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox. The victory moved the Yankees back to within six games, which still sounds insurmountable, but is better than being eight games out, of Boston in the wildcard race. The Yankees trailed the Red Sox 2-0 with two outs in the seventh inning, when Cody Ransom doubled off Boston starter Jon Lester. Joe Girardi sent up ...

Recap: Mets 4, Brewers 2
Published 9/1/2008 by The Man (noreply@blogger.com) at Mets Prospectus
The Mets were baffled by Ben Sheets over 5 innings, in what was a great pitchers duel between Sheets and Santana, but Sheets did not come out for the sixth because of a tight groin. The Mets then capitalized on the Brewers bullpen for the tone of 4 runs in 4 innings. The Most important being a Carlos Delgado go ahead 2-run homerun in the 8th inning off of Eric Gagne. ...

Mets Sweep Brewers
Published 9/3/2008 by The Man (noreply@blogger.com) at Mets Prospectus
The Mets jumped out early, again, for the tone of 6 runs in the first thanks to a Delgado RBI, followed shortly by a Church grandslam, and capped off by a Brian Schneider solo shot. The Mets added insurance runs later in the game to preserve the win for Oliver Perez who went 6.2 innings and allowed just 2 ER. The bullpen, once game, did not allow a run. That's not 15.1 scoreless innings. Amazing. ...

Mets Drop Game One
Published 29 days ago by The Man (noreply@blogger.com) at Mets Prospectus
That is what you would call an "ugly game"... The Mets didn't hit, they didn't pitch, and they sure as hell didn't field. What makes me scratch my head about this game is that the Mets were out of it early, yet Jerry managed to use Heilman, Feliciano, Show, and Sanchez, knowing that they had a second game tonight. I'm not sure what has to happen for Jerry to use Parnell and Reyes in a game. You'll never know if they can pitch in a big spot if you don't let them pitch. It's not like this was a 1 run game, they were down by 6.. This game doesn't deserve anymore thought.. Here's the boxscore ...
