Cubs sign OF Jim Edmonds; option OF Pie to AAA
Published 5/15/2008 by David Golebiewski at The Transaction Guy
The Chicago Cubs signed veteran outfielder Jim Edmonds on Wednesday. Edmonds, an 8-time Gold Glove winner and a 4-time all star, was recently released by the San Diego Padres. The 37 year-old has battled numerous injuries over the past few seasons, including a calf injury that sidelined him at the beginning of the 2008 season. Edmonds hit .184/.270/.241 in 101 PA for the Padres before being shown the door. Edmonds is expected to platoon with Reed Johnson in center field.
To make room for Edmonds on the 25-man roster, the Cubs demoted outfielder Felix Pie to AAA Iowa. Long ranked as one of the top prospects in the Chicago system, Pie batted .222/.286/.286 in 70 PA for the Cubs ...
At Least Edmonds Won't Be As Unpopular As Hundley

Short of OJ Simpson, I'm not sure Jim Hendry could have signed anyone less popular with Cubs fans than Jim Edmonds. But Edmonds is going to have to work very, very hard to be the least popular player to play for the Cubs. That title belongs solely and unmistakably to Todd Hundley. A quick recap: On my 30th birthday, Hundley signed a four-year, $23.5 million deal after putting together back-to-back 24-homer, high-average, injury-shortened seasons. He was the son of a popular former Cub. He was a two-time All Star. He had once hit 41 home runs in a season. What could go wrong? Everything. He played a grand total of 171 games over two seasons, batted ...
Cubs sign Edmonds

Jim Edmonds According to mlb.com (click here for the article), the Chicago Cubs have signed Jim Edmonds to play CF, sending down Felix Pie. Edmonds started the season with the San Diego Padres, hitting .178 with 1 HR and 6 RBI prior to his release. He has been very injury prone in recent years, having not reached 500 AB in a season since 2001. Last season he had just 365 AB, hitting .252 with 12 HR and 53 RBI. He certainly is not the player that he once was, but this is a low risk move for the Cubs who never seemed happy having Pie (.222, 1 HR, 7 RBI) patrolling CF. I wouldn’t go out and grab Edmonds to fill your OF slot, but if he starts to hit and you are in need of a short-term stop ...
Since You’ve Been Gone

You’ll be happy — or disheartened, as it may be — to learn that I am finished with this little experiment called college. Best of all: I wasn’t even forcibly asked to leave. Through some luck of the draw, the University of Missouri has called upon me to graduate, after a measly four years. And they’re giving me a diploma as a parting gift.
I’m not leaving college with a bang, but with a slow, pathetic whimper, having just bombed my final in Elementary Piano, an elective I took specifically so I could take tests that I would not bomb. I was asked to perform five different songs, of which I could play all of ...
