(Pedro) Martinez could be back next week The Mets have announced only that Martinez threw 77 pitches in a 4 1/3-inning appearance against a Cardinals team in an extended Spring Training game on Monday and that he will throw a bullpen session at Turner Field on Wednesday or Thursday. But last week the club was quite optimistic that Martinez would return before June 1. And the plan to have him throw before pitching coach Rick Peterson and manager Willie Randolph two or three days after his extended spring performance strongly suggests that he is close to a return. One of the most frustrating parts of last weeks 3-1 series loss to the Nationals was the outstanding starting pitching the Mets received. They are just annihilating other teams in regards to run differential and are getting it done on the offensive end as well. The Mets are in the second tier of pitching talent sitting fifth in ERA+ with a 106 behind the Phillies, which is rather surprising to me. What else is rather surprising is the fact that the ace by far of the Mets staff has been Johan Maine. Name ERA+ Maine 145 Santana 123 Pelfrey 98 Perez 96 Figueroa 79I have been under a rock for a bit so I really had no idea John Maine was doing so well. In fact, it is even more ...
