Theater of the Absurd

When did the Yankees become the LA Dodgers? We're not in Hollywood. What are we talking about, you say. The Yankees have signed Billy Crystal, yeah that guy, to a 1-day contract for this Thursday, March 14. It happens to be Crystal's 60th birthday, so the life long Yankees fan will wear #60 that day and play against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Yes, play in the actual game. We love Billy Crystal; have always loved his work, but this is ridiculous and makes a mockery of the game. How about those kids trying to break into the majors who never even get to play with the big club in an exhibition game? Source: ...
Yankees' Prospect*

And you thought Garth Brooks: San Diego Padre was a bad idea: The Yankees are ready to add a touch of Hollywood to their roster, announcing their plans to sign actor and comedian Billy Crystal to a one-day contract during Spring Training. Crystal will sign the contract on Wednesday and work out with the Yankees at Legends Field before playing in the club's game on Thursday against the Pirates in Tampa. Commissioner Bud Selig approved the Yankees' extension of a contract to Crystal. Normally I'd be against this kind of mockery of the game, bit seeing as though it's against the Pirates, I'll let it slide. Hell, Crystal will probably go 3 for 5 with a couple of ...
Billy Crystal: Yankees Sign 60-year-old 1-Tool Player (For A Day)
Published 3/11/2008 at FanIQ Blog
I believe we've found out why the Yankees organization had their collective panties in a bundle this weekend, accusing the Tampa Bay Rays of taking the spring games too seriously. It's because they aren't taking this seriously at all.
With Bud Selig's blessing, likely while asleep at his desk, the New York Yankees will sign Billy Crystal Thursday to play with the team for one day. I wish I were joking.

Yankees ink Billy Crystal

Get that ticker-tape ready, Billy Crystal is a New York
Yankee!
This is an incredible signing by the Yankees. That bullpen
that I think is a little weak just got a lot better.
I'm not kidding, by the way. They really did sign the guy!
Even funnier, after reporting to camp on Wednesday -
hopefully in great shape if he wants to survive manager Joe Girardi's camp - he
will ...
Promotion Night At The Cable Box
Published 3/11/2008 by Dustin Parkes at Drunk Jays Fans
In today's post for the Globe on Baseball Blog, Rob MacLeod writes about the uselessness of the latest Billy Crystal Yankees promotion (and I only mean useless in the sense that it's of no use whatsoever), and invites readers to take a stab at being the marketing director for the Blue Jays. Every year, we at DJF try to convince the Jays marketing department that the world is ready for another attempt at ten cent beer night, and every year they refuse to answer our calls, emails, letters, meeting requests and home stakeouts. Seeing as though only an idiot makes a second attempt at something he fails at the first time, I've thought of some other promotional ...

Canada in Olympics
Published 3/13/2008 by John Northey at Batter's Box Interactive Magazine
Team Canada has made it into the Olympics! Billy Crystal leads off for Yanks! Schilling on 60 day DL! Padres in China! Lots of !!!!
OK, not really a lot of news, but time to move on from injuries and back to the fun stuff. Team Canada makes the Olympics thanks to a 4-3 win over South Korea. They beat the other two teams tied for the top spot, South Korea & Taiwan thus are locked in for one of the three spots. The Yankees are being silly and giving an actor a spring training at bat, ala the Tigers and Tom Sellick years ago. Curt Schilling officially on the 60 day DL now, as expected. He is listed as being a possibility ...
