BBWA Introduces the 'Curt Schilling Rule'
Published 12/5/2007 by Matt Watson at FanHouse
... Really? Are there actually people so ignorant that they will jump to that conclusion? I guess it's possible, but I've never even heard such a suggestion. If the BBWAA is really concerned about that perception, though, maybe they ought to forbid writers from collaborating with athletes on autobiographies, too. That, if anything, seems like an actual conflict of interest. Not surprisingly, Schilling penned a post on 38 Pitches disagreeing with the BBWA's decision (and if this specific subject doesn't interest you, the post is still worth reading for his takedown on Bill Conlin, ...
Schill checks in on new 'rule'
Published 12/5/2007 at Extra Bases
Curt Schilling wasted no time in offering his thoughts on the new 'Schilling rule' in a blog post on 38pitches.com this afternoon.
The Baseball Writers' Association of America voted this morning to approve a resolution in which, starting in 2013, all players that have contracts which include financial terms that are attached to a major awards will not be eligible for consideration for that award. The 'Schilling rule' resolution stems from Curt Schilling's new contract which includes a $1M bonus for the Sox righthander if he gets at least one Cy Young vote in ...

... Cy Young, MVP) any players “whose contracts call for bonuses based on their placement in the voting.” In his story at mlb.com, Tom Singer writes that the BBWAA has long considered the move—conflict of interest and all that—but it was Curt Schilling’s latest contract with the Red Sox that finally moved the Association to act. Schilling’s new deal calls for a $1 million bonus if he receives even a single vote for the 2008 AL Cy Young Award. After signing the deal, Schilling, writing on his blog , joked about possibly bribing a writer for his vote.“When we saw that, people went ...

... started giving out these awards it was just to honor somebody. You got a trophy, there was no monetary reward that went with it,” BBWAA secretary-treasurer Jack O’Connell said. “I honestly don’t think people vote with that in mind. But the attachment of a bonus to these awards creates a perception that we’re trying to make these guys rich.”
As you would expect, Schilling has already responded to the new rule over on his blog, 38 Pitches.

38 Pitches: Schilling: The Schilling clause??
Published 12/6/2007 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
38 Pitches: Schilling: The Schilling clause?? More power than a floating Cecil von Renthe-Fink memo...it’s The Schilling Clause! Give me a break. Don’t get me wrong, 100k, 500k, 1 million dollars is a huge sum of money. But to think that these guys ever approached this as anything other than them being touted as the ‘experts’ on who wins what is crap. Add to that I seriously doubt anyone ever looked at this from a perception standpoint and thought wow, they are making this guy rich. I would disagree. The only step that hasn’t happened yet is to stop them from voting on awards ...

The Schilling Rule The BWAA has created a rule which says that players who receive monetary bonuses based upon MVP, ROY or Cy Young Award voting will not longer be eligible for those awards starting in 2013. This is commonly being referred to as the Schilling Rule after Curt Schilling's latest contract which has a $1 million bonus if he receives a single Cy Young Award in 2008. Curt Schilling addresses the new rule in his latest posting on 38Pitches.com. Schilling makes a number of good points but he misses the main point of this new BWAA ...
Curt Schilling On His Bonus Clause, And Others' [Curt Schilling]
Published 12/6/2007 by Leitch at Deadspin
... Curt Schilling, on his immaculately typed blog this week, blasted the new Baseball Writers Association rule that says anyone who has an incentive in their contract to win an MVP or Cy Young award will be ineligible. There's money to be lost, but that doesn't seem to be his issue; actually, we're not sure what his issue is, though it does give him license to hammer Bill Conlin, which is kind of funny. (Check your email, Curt: An angry missive is surely coming!) ...
Schilling Likes His Sportswriters to be Homers

... to me. Peter understands the game as well. He knows he’s not the smartest guy in the room and that’s why he taps some of the smartest people in the game to make his points. But I love that he’s a fan.”
So Curt Schilling wants his newsmen to be fist-pumping homers. Fantastic. Surely, Mr. Gammons is thrilled to hear that he is thought of as a homer and “not the smartest guy in the room.” Question: How does one assess the smartest man in the room?

Defending the sportswriters from a rabid Schilling

... pending discussion with MLB and the Players Association, the man for whom the proposal was named — Mr. 38 Pitches himself — was none too happy. In a rather personal and often rambling blog post, Schilling lays into the BBWAA for many of the inconsistencies that bloggers have long noted about their voting patterns. He rails on voters omitting pitchers from MVP ballots or Hall of Fame ballots for petty reasons some years only to include them in others. He wonders why traditional print writers are any more or less qualified to vote than the writers like Buster Olney, Jayson Stark, ...

... . This was prompted by a clause in Curt Schilling’s contract that gives him $1 million if he receives just a single vote for the Cy Young award. Jack O’Connell, the BBWAA secretary-treasurer, said that the attachment of bonuses to the awards creates the perception that the writers are dishing out a monetary reward to the players. Curt Schilling fired back on his website saying that if the writers would just vote for the best player, then it wouldn’t be a problem. He also goes on to say that any writer who injects his personal bias into a vote shouldn’t be allowed to ...
