They Grow Up So Fast
The Big Ten Geeks break down individual improvement from year-to-year. As expected, the biggest jump is between a players freshman and sophomore year. The good news for Michigan is that they have the second highest percentage of returning freshmen minutes in the conference with Zack Novak, Laval Lucas-Perry, and Stu Douglass.

Al McGuire was right: Players improve most after first year
The Dagger —
Such is the conclusion from Big Ten Geeks (hat tip: Beyond The Arc),
who set out to test Al McGuire's famous hypothesis that "the best thing
about freshman is that they become sophomores." The Geeks decided to
test the differences in statistical output (using tempo-free stats,
naturally) between freshman and sophomore year, sophomores and juniors,
and juniors and seniors. The result? Al McGuire was "absolutely right":
The big, overarching conclusion is this: a player shows the most
improvement between his freshman ...

... Big Ten Geeks took a look at production differences as college basketball players age. Not surprisingly the greatest jump in production came as players became sophomores. The inspiration for the story came from Al McGuire's famous quote, "The best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores." The results actually showed that the increase in production from FR to SO is actually greater than production from their SO to SR seasons. All of this bodes very well for the likes of Ralph Sampson, Colten Iverson and Devoe Joseph. ...
