No Tiger in British Open ratings tank
Published 7/22/2008 by TheHotRead at SmackCaster SmackBlog
... No one person is bigger than…no one player is bigger than a sport. Well, that won’t stand up in golf. Tiger Woods won the British Open by not being there. According to the Los Angeles Times, the overnight ratings for Sunday’s final round — even with the Greg Norman drama — dropped 14.6% from 4.1 to 3.5. The same story also informs us that next year the tournament will be only on cable as ESPN will show it, snapping a 50-year run on ABC. ...

WR Isaac Bruce, San Francisco -- Who better to help implement Mike Martz's offensive system than Bruce, who had so many stellar seasons with Martz in St. Louis? PGA’s TV Ratings Whimper Without Tiger’s Roar
Published 7/23/2008 by Signal to Noise at SPORTSbyBROOKS
Despite the good story and impressive feat of Padraig Harrington winning back-to-back British Opens (as well as Greg Norman being competitive ), Thomas Bonk of the L.A. TIMES passes on a shocker: without Tiger Woods , the PGA Tour’s TV ratings are taking a dive . Tiger Woods, U.S. Open 2008 The details of the tournaments without Tiger, as far as eyeballs on sets go, do not bode well for the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup. If You Can Wrap Your Head Around It, Golf Ratings are down Without Tiger
Published 7/23/2008 by noreply@blogger.com (Shane B.) at Dogs That Chase Cars
In news that wouldn't even make a coked out chimpanzee raise an eyebrow, golf ratings are down without Tiger Woods in the field. I know, it's like hearing your parents really adopted you. Because I'm not very good with the whole "numbers" thing, I'll just let the story explain. Case 1: Buick Open. Missing Tiger ...

Let me just say that I'm a golf junkie. I watch. I play. I play it on my video game. I talk about it incessantly. And I used to be a golf columnist, too. I was always annoyed by the Johnny-Come-Lately golf fans who only care about golf when Tiger Woods plays. It never occurred to me what Tiger meant to golf until he's not playing.

One putt could have changed plenty for Harrington (AP)

Padraig Harrington has two British Open titles, and it all started with a miss. But it wasn't his. The morning after he defended his title at Royal Birkdale, the Irishman already was looking ahead.
