NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced today that he is taking a 20 percent cut from his $11 million salary as the league deals with the impact from the economic downturn. The league offered voluntary layoffs, and to date has had 169 personnel do so. The layoffs have come from holding such as NFL Films, which laid off 21 of its 283 employees in March, followed by the league seeking another 150 “voluntary separations”. According to The AP, “The NFL announced Dec. 9 it would reduce its staff of 1,100 by 10 to 15 percent. Seventy-six people took buyouts while 45 jobs were eliminated and 48 openings went unfilled.” Goodell has the second highest commissioner salary behind MLB’s Bud Selig at over $18 million. ...

Even with the downturn in the economy, layoffs in the league, and Commissioner Goodell taking a 20 percent pay cut, the NFL’s salary cap will increase to $127 million for the upcoming season. According to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network, teams were notified Wednesday that the cap will increase by over $4 million, thus placing the cap for 2009 at $127 million. The reason? Teams did not spend as much as they were supposed to under the current collective bargaining agreement. The CBA is flexible in that the cap moves down if teams spend over the cap limit, and moves up if they spend under the cap limit. According to ESPN.com, the Browns traded former Pro Bowl tight end Kellen Winslow today to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for undisclosed draft picks. Winslow played in 44 games and hauled in 219 receptions for 2,459 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Browns after being chosen in the first round of the 2004 draft.
