Before this afternoon, I had not been online since just minutes after my "Tom Crean" post Tuesday evening. Of course, I'm trying to get up to speed, but I can see from the comments that my post may have made me seem ambivalent about Crean's hire. It's hard to say if Tom Crean will finally be the man who makes Hoosier fans forget about Bob Knight. I think it's easy to say, though, that Crean was the best man available for the job. I like Crean's rationale for the job. "It's Indiana", Crean said. He's right. It is Indiana. Not exactly. But Crean’s deal does include a provision that will theoretically keep him from jumping ship any time soon : Under a preliminary deal between Crean and the university, Crean would owe $3 million if he resigns in the first three years of an eight-year contract. The amount lowers to $2 million in years four and five. It would be $1 million the last three years of the deal. ...Video: Tom Crean press conference

The only logical explanation I can muster for Tom Crean accepting the head hoops job in Bloomington is that Rick Greenspan is paying him a lot over the next eight years and he’s wanted this job for a while. It's going to be said often, but this is a solid hire. Not an obvious home run, but not a stretch by any means. Crean is 42 years old and has a Final Four on his resume and eight years as a head coach (about a .650 winning percentage at Marquette).
