Topps and MiLB came out today with their awards for the top players in each of the minor leagues.
The full list can be found here.
For the Yankees, Shelley Duncan of the International League and Austin Romine of the Florida State League took home the honors.
Duncan, a Yankee fan favorite was .277/30/99; Romine was .276/13/72 in what is generally considered to be a pitcher’s league.
Jesus Montero did not make the list, but there are probably a couple of reasons why–his season was split in two leagues, A+ and AA, and he missed the final month with a rather grotesque finger injury.
Still, it’s nice when all ...
Topps/MiLB Name Players of the Year
Nationals Farm Authority —
MiLB.com has the news today that Topps and MiLB named their top players for each league and the Nationals had one representative and one huge omission (in my opinion). OF Eury Perez was named the top player for the Gulf Coast League. The 19-year old Perez led the GCL with a 0.381 BA during a breakout season that saw him hit 381/443/503 with 18/24 SB. He’s one of the more promising bats in the Nationals organization. More surprising was the lack of a Nationals prospect. Topps and MiLB named Rockies CA Jordan Pacheco the top player in the South Atlantic League, overlooking Nationals CA Derek Norris . I’m puzzled at this choice because here are Norris’ rankings in the various Sally ...

MiLB.com: Topps, MiLB name Players of the Year The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays each had a pair of farmhands named the Topps Player of the Year in their respective leagues. Only one pitcher (Alexander Colome of Tampa and Hudson Valley in the NY/P, which didn’t have a whole lot of hitting prospects this year). And one of my favorite minor league names, Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Braves/Danville-Appy), grabbed an award, too.

Shelley Duncan and Austin Romine were named the Topps Minor League Players of the Year for the Triple-A International League and the High-A Florida State League, respectively.
Tom Krasovic has a cool little piece on Damon Oppenheimer, so make sure you check it out. It’s pretty amazing to see how many former Padres’ scouts are holding down major front office jobs around the game, D-Opp included.
AzFL Surprise (10-5 win over Scottsdale on Wednesday)
Brandon Laird: 2 for 5, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Another Market Inefficiency, The Rays Tuesday Win And Minor League Awards
Rays Index —
From the “Can’t make this up” pile, Marc Topkin drops this little nugget…
…the Rays decided to keep Uchibori, Iwamura’s interpreter the past two years, and gave him a job as a scout in his native Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
Just another move proving that the Rays are trendsetters and super-sleuths at uncovering market inefficiencies. Because obviously interpreters make excellent talent evaluators. There go the Rays, reinventing the game of baseball, one interpreter at a time.
If only the Yankees had thought of that.
