Shallow Thoughts & Nearsighted Observations

... of working in this case. I also loved the selection of OLB Clint Sintim in the 2nd round of the Draft. He played in one of the very few collegiate 3-4's at Virginia, but the Giants like to blitz their SLB a great deal, and Sintim fits that profile very well. Another departure from traditional thinking for the Giants, which generally makes me feel very warm and fuzzy inside. Other draftees whom I like include William Beatty, Ramses Barden, Travis Beckum, Andre Brown, and Rhett Bomar. Jerry ...

Can he figure out what to do with the freakish Ramses Barden, aside from throw him Red Zone fade routes? Can he figure out how Mario Manningham can contribute? Can he figure out a way to create mismatches with Kevin Boss and Travis Beckum?

... This guy showed up fully equipped with all the equipment necessary to play in a PBA television event. He had a gigantic roller bowling bag complete with two balls, two pairs of shoes, towels, powder, and all kinds of other gadgets that only professionals know how to use. I will admit I do have my own bowling bag and balls but I didn't have them yesterday, so Ramses was at a distinct advantage and I beat him down!!! I BEAT HIM DOWN!!!
P.S. Another NYG rookie Travis Beckum also beat him down!

Giants sign third-round pick Beckum
Big Blue View —

The third pick of the fourth round, neither of Scott's immediate draft slot neighbors (with the Chiefs and Browns) have signed. The closest player in the draft order to Scott that has signed a deal is Bears DE Henry Melton, who inked a four-year, $2.261 million deal with a $511,230 signing bonus. The last pick of the third round, Giants TE Travis Beckum, signed a four-year, $2.363 million deal with a $611,000 ...
Video Friday: Travis Beckum

Travis Beckum was discussed quite a bit in our look at New York Giants' tight ends the other day. Here is a little Beckum video. Gotta tell you, I love what I see. This guy can catch, and he moves like a wide receiver.

... hauled in the ball.
Pretty good morning for Hakeem Nicks, who made a couple of good catches over the middle in traffic. Nicks missed a chance for a couple of big plays downfield, though. On one, he was behind his defender and Andre Woodson overthrew him. On another, Woodson badly underthrew him and Nicks attempted to adjust but could not haul in the ball. That one was in the end zone.
The other rookie receivers -- Ramses Barden and Travis Beckum -- each caught a handful of balls this morning. ...

... interesting day for me. I was quiet most of the week, didn't ask any questions during group interviews or really go out of my way to seek anything on my own. As Giants Communications Direction Pat Hanlon had told me to do early in the week, I was just going with the flow.
On Friday, though, I decided it was time for me to dust off the reporter skills and really start acting the part. So, I got myself involved in a Ramses Barden interview. Jumped into a Travis Beckum interview, and after a media session with Hakeem ...

What can be said is that all three rookie receivers drafted by Reese have shown flashes of why the Giants believed they did not need to go out and get veteran replacements for Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer.
During the first few days of camp, first-round pick Hakeem Nicks, and third-round picks Ramses Barden and Travis Beckum have all provided glimpses of their potential. ...

... point. That has to be what matters, not sentimentality. Hagan is forcing his way onto this roster, though seven receivers is probably one more than the Giants would like to keep. The Giants talk repeatedly, though, about keeping the best players and not having a set formula. Hagan is earning it. And yes, these guys are in order of the playing time I think they would get if the regular season started today.

4. Run to the edges
Those kinds of plays, where maybe you can pull a guard, are the kind the Giants line seems to block the best. Maybe it takes a tad longer to develop, which is dangerous in short-yardage, but it is the kind of play the Giants run best. Play to your strength, not your weakness.

... on the Giants' first series; at least it appeared to be intended for Samuel, who stepped in front of tight end Travis Beckum and picked it off, leading to the second touchdown for Philly. Manning threw another one just before the half, setting up another touchdown, and by then it was over. The Giants have to hope it's just a minor slump, because if Manning keeps throwing to the other team like this, and completing balls at a rate lower than 50-percent (which he's doing the past three weeks), New York's going to be out of the pennant race by Thanksgiving ...

What do the Giants do now? Ideas for salvaging the season

... there are certain veterans whose warranty has expired. So, let the kids play. -- Activate Ramses Barden -- Sure, wide receiver isn't really an issue. But, the Green Zone still is. And, yes, that probably means de-activating Derek Hagan, an idea which I hate. But, you know what? The coverage teams stink with Hagan, who might be the team's best cover guy. For now, they can stink without him. It's time to start finding out about Barden. -- Same for Travis Beckum -- Every snap that Darcy Johnson is on the ...
