Hell's Bells
ShysterBall —
It's not just Peavy checking out of San Diego: Trevor Hoffman, the all-time leaders in saves and the face of the San Diego franchise, will not return to the Padres for 2009. The team has withdrawn its contract offer for 2009 to Hoffman, who is eligible for free agency this fall. Hoffman has played the last 16 seasons with the Padres, tenure which ranks behind only John Smoltz's 20 years with the Braves among active players. He also ranks first all-time among active pitchers in career save percentage, at .892.I think this may hit my ...

... to spend a great deal of money on a reliever this winter. So now we're down to four teams: the Tigers, the Mets, the Brewers and the Cardinals. The Tigers supposedly don't have a great deal of money to spend this winter, the Brewers can't really afford a big contract for a reliever, and the Cardinals have bigger problems to worry about. This leaves the Mets all by their lonesome. Meanwhile, Brian Fuentes , Wood and Rodriguez are free agents. So are Juan Cruz , Trevor Hoffman , Jason Isringhausen and Bob Howry , all of whom are capable -- ...

... Terry and Steve Blass . And I suppose Don Larsen's perfect game is notable in this context, too. Good pitchers will occasionally pitch great games, and sometimes even in the biggest games. Who would you want in the seventh game of a World Series? Jack Morris was a very good pitcher. But only a terribly foolish manager would choose Morris to start Game 7 if Mike Mussina was available. • According to this unsigned article , the Mets are interested in signing Trevor Hoffman or Kerry Wood as their new closer, and perhaps "acquiring a set-up man ...

... all because of a .252 Triple-A hitter . What's most interesting (to me, anyway) about this story about Lou Gehrig's old house isn't that someone lives there, and welcomes sightseers; it's that there are houses in Manhattan surrounded by lush yards with big leafy trees. Roger Angell turns 89 later this week, and doesn't write about baseball nearly as often as he used to. So it's a treat when he does, even when everyone else is writing about the same thing . Trevor Hoffman wants to pitch again next year , and why not? Though he'll turn 42 a ...

... and Rafael Soriano. Both are type A free agents who will likely pursue employment with other teams. However, with Wagner being a type A free agent who was offered arbitration, Atlanta will lose their first round pick to the Red Sox as compensation for the signing. Wagner, who returned from Tommy John surgery last season, eliminated all doubt when he posted a 1.72 ERA with 26 strikeouts over 15 and 2/3 innings.
Wagner is 3rd on the active saves list, behind only Trevor Hoffman and Mariano Rivera. Wagner needs 40 saves to pass John ...
