Twins trade Carlos Gomez for JJ Hardy
Twinkie Town —
The first report was from Brewers.com, via Twitter:
Brewers acquire CF Carlos Gomez from Minnesota in exchange for SS J.J. Hardy.
I did NOT see that coming. It's been confirmed pretty much everywhere.
According to MLBTradeRumors, thanks to Hardy's midseason demotion in '09, he's under team control for 2010 and 2011.
Hardy had good seasons in 2007 and 2008 at the plate, putting up OPS+ numbers north of 100 both seasons, but was terrible last year (see stats below). He's decent ...
Another Wished for Blue Jay Trade Bites the Dust.
Bluebird Banter —
A lot of us were hoping that the Blue Jays might be able to trade for J.J. Hardy to fill our need for a shortstop for the next few years. It's not going to happen, the Twins traded CFer Carlos Gomez to the Brewers for Hardy. I guess if the Brewers were looking for a cheap, strong defensive CFer we really didn't have anyone to send them.
If you are wondering what free agents are available this offseason MLB Trade Rumors has the list here. They also have a list of shortstops that might be on the trading ...

The Bottom Line —
... . Maybe the Angles will take a flyer on Dye as a DH if Vladdy leaves... With Jed Lowrie nursing a bothersome wrist injury and Alex Gonzalez sitting on a $6M option, the Red Sox continue to search for a good solution at short stop. Some though J.J. Hardy offered some pop with 25 HR, 90 RBI potential, but his career .262 BA and .751 OPS numbers never impressed me much. The point is now moot thanks to a trade between the Brewers and Twins that will make Hardy the short stop in Minnesota and the speedy Carlos Gomez the center fielder in Milwaukee. News and Notes
Raise the Jolly Roger —
... officially the offseason:
The Pirates removed three players from the 40-man roster: Virgil Vasquez, Eric Hacker, and Steve Lerud. Vasquez, of course, pitched horribly in the second half as an emergency starter/bullpen guy with the Bucs. Hacker was decent in Indianapolis and did not impress in a few late September appearances. Lerud is a catcher with far too much depth around him (Doumit, Diaz, Jaramillo, Sanchez) to keep around.
Two notable trades today: the Twins sent Carlos Gomez to the hated Brewers in exchange for former Pirate-killer J.J. Hardy ...

Fack Youk —
... Be that as it may, other teams are already acting. One of the first deals this off-season occurred Friday, when the Brewers flipped shortstop JJ Hardy to the Twins for center fielder Carlos Gomez. On the surface this deal has minimal impact on the Yankees, but I think there could be a ripple effect to this. ...
